Jesus just watched it and man was it well done. Editing, Story, Acting, the whole kit and kaboodle.

Re: City of God

Very powerful film. I would have liked a little more levity (if such a thing exists in the god-forsaken place), but it really stays with you. Very gripping.

Re: City of God

yeah.. I loved the edit styles and the pacing.. the way the story was told was very Quentin Tarantino-ish, but in a good way.

Re: City of God

I don't think I've ever seen kid-actors that good before in my life. Most movies with a lot of young actors have a few moments here and there that snap you out of the mood and make you think you're watching a middle-school play for a moment-- or at least an after-school special.

It is sad though that a movie based on a true story can be compared to Tarantino-esque levels of absurd violence.

Doesn't exactly invite tourists to Rio the way LoTR is making them flock to New Zealand. Although I did pass through 'city of god' a few weeks ago and didn't get shot at once.

Re: City of God

It is an amazing movie all shot on 16mm handheld! Great run shoot & miracle edit! I love the non linearity of the story!

Re: City of God

This movie rocks. All should see. Not often these days do movies over 2hrs keep the viewer interested. I didn't want it to end. The cinematography is freakin' phenomenal. This really shot on 16mm? Loved the night shots. The silver hue.

Also watched the documentary on the special features. Very good, worth price of rental by itself. It is so crazy what they live each day.

Re: City of God

It is indeed a great movie, but they have exaggerated a little bit on the violence. I don't think that Rio is that violent. It may be violent, but not that violent.

As for the format the film was shot on, I thought it was 35mm. Was it actually shot on 16mm?

The whole film was good. This is the first action film from Brazil that I could actually say: WOW! This is a film I wish I had made.

Most Brazilian films I have watched just portray the misery in the northeastern region of the country.

The country is so rich in culture, but they seem to focus mostly on the misery. Came on, it is time for a change!

Anyway, I read somewhere that Walter Salles is working on a remake of Butch Cassidy and the sundance kid. Can't wait for that.

Anyway, all the best

Fidel.

Re: City of God

Hey dudes,

I went to the film's web site and it says that the film was shot in a mixture of 35mm and 16mm.
They did an experimental version of the film digitally, but didn't read anything mentioning the usage of digital on the film.

Anyway, all the best

Fidel.

I had a meeting with Kodak reps two days ago (they where trying to convince us to use Vision 2 super 16 instead of Vision 1 35) and they pointed to City of God.. they shot on 16 and 35... and it looked great. The establishing wide shots where 35 where the handheld intimate stuff was all 16.

Re: City of God

Just added it to my rental queue at Netflix based on everything I've been hearing about it. I put it at the top of the queue, so I'll likely see it next week.

Re: City of God

Dude, you have to buy it. It is worth having!!!
When I bought mine, I had the option of paying £5 to rent it and £9 to buy. Well, If I pay £5 I can only see it once, but if I pay £9 I can see it whenever I want.

As for the format it was shot on, yes Jarred, it was shot on 16mm and 35mm.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: City of God

Just finished watching it.

Brilliant.

I'd say more, but that sums it up. Also, I'm going back into the other room to watch the special features, then to watch it again.

Re: City of God

Hi all,
The film is great!
Jarred's right, they shot in 35 and S16, all with aaton cameras (aaton 35, XTRProd and A-minima) and used all kinds of DIY dollys, from pogocam-ish poles in low mode (Chicken run and and chicken POV) to wheelchair dolly ;D - check out the making off in the extra disc.
The film was timed digitally (2k scan I believe) and then outputed to film, 35mm.
Cheers,
Pedro

Re: City of God

Hey Pedro,

I didn't read S16 on the site. They do mention the 16mm, but not the S16. Where did you read this?

All the best and bem vindo a comunidade da DVX.

Fidel.

Re: City of God

Yea this was a great film. if you liked it I have to reccomend La Haine(Hate in America) directed by Matthieu Kassovitz. IT IS FRIGGIN AMAZING. best movie imho. just mentioning it, caz its another gang, teenage, violence crime, film but from a totally different angle. and in black and white. it won best director at cannes in 95 too.

Re: City of God

I still can't believe it was 16mm....that movie should have won best cinematography.

Great movie in pretty much every way possible. Pretty darned violent, though.

Amazingly enough, most of the kids, the younger ones anyway were kids that lived in the neighborhood. They weren't even actors.

That film is perhaps my all time favorite film. It is perhaps the best all around film I have ever seen. The story line, editing, cinematography, music, acting... the whole thing was just amazing.
