CitiDisk HD Firestore

Just curious if anyone uses the CitiDisk HD Firestore HD Recorder for the HVX. I would like to know how it works out for you. The recorder is available know from CitiDisk HD at (www.shining.com)

Thanks Gerhard

I don't think it's actually shipping yet even though the web site says it is.
I asked about it yesterday at EVS here in LA and they didn't think they were going to actually get one for a good month at least.

Last I heard from CitiDisk is that it is not yet shipping. The advantage that it has over the Firestore is the smaller form factor. The disadvantages are: 1) We know the Firestore actually works, despite its clunky form factor and noisy fan 2) It does not have all of the controls that Firestore has 3) It does not have the albeit-noisy fan and shock mounting of Firestore. Having said that, if smaller form factor, lower price and more flexible power options can combine with a reliable device, then this is a great savings over Firestore. I still prefer, at least by specs, the Cineporter.

I am interested in it myself. The advantages I think are:

1. Small size as mentioned. The Firestore seems clunky and the Cineporter looks really big from the initial pictures.
2. I llike the battery setup with the internal and external for non-stop use.
3. Much more cost effective than the other choices.
4. HOPEFULLY can record native formats.

Downsides:
1. Shining Technology doesn't have the most reliable track record.
2. The description says you can play back you clips in the viewfinder but people have disputed that on other forums.

I am going on vacation September for a week in the Sierra Nevadas and planned on taking the HVX along. If the Citidisk becomes available by then I will make the purchase. That way I can run alot of footage through it on a non-critical, non-paying gig. Ought to know by the end of that trip exactly how Citidisk holds up.

That isn't possible as of today, because in the native recording modes, the HVX200 doesn't send data out the DV port. Only the Cineporter will fully support native recording modes.

That's not to say the Citidisk won't be able to drop frames automatically to conserve disk space (do the pull-down during recording), but whether they will implement this is to be seen.

I Haven't used their products myself but Jarred had reported some bad experiences with their products in the past, reliability issue etc. I would check out his posts before I trust my prized footage to it.

Remember that we're talking about hard disk drives here, regardless of how they're implimented. I would never own an HDD system that did not have built in drive utilites like the FS-100 has. CinePorter will have them, but I am told that it will run automatically, you can't trigger it off manually. That worries me. Auto repair functions rarely work properly when you most need them.

Based on track record and experience with it's competition, I'd stay as far away from Citidisk as I could.
