Concerning the physical design of CinePorter...

Is any thought being given to how this unit will physically attach to the shoulder mounted HD P2 camera that is in the works?

As it looks now directly mounting CinePorter to such a shoulder mounted camera is not an option.

The recently announced 6 foot cable should aid in making the CinePorter usable for this camera.

It is perhaps wise to look into the future and consider how the CinePorter will work wth this camera and/or how the CinePorter will be "mounted" on the set. Some provision for mounting it atop a C-stand may be one solution.

hi david,
i think cineporter is an amazing tool for the hvx. i think what jarred and barry are saying about the removable hard drives is true. but for me one point is even more important: the safety of the footage. if i could swap the hdds in the cineporter, i would use multiple hdds and change them after every major shot. this would be like changing a tape. i could be sure, that previous shot footage is safe stored and can not get lost while an hd crashes during shooting. this is more important than anything else, because you can shoot over shedule, but you can`t re-shoot footage, when sets or actors are no more avialable. the offloading option is quit nice, but like barry said, it`s too time consuming when shooting.
i really like your product and i am thinking about buying one, but if you can implement a swapping hd option i will buy one for sure.

keep up the good work

What would be really ideal is raid 1 paired with removable drives - Instant back up. I really don't think people realize how scary it is to have all your footage on a hard drive without any tape to go back to if it dies. If your $9 enclosure destroys your hard drive that's it. Fed Exing your only HD with master footage on it is begging for disaster. But sometimes you need to make the Fed Ex deadline and copying hard drives won't cut it.

I agree. Raid 1 would be great. storing footage on a HD is really scary as they are prone to damage and other issues. Let's say that 1 out of 500 shoots goes badly and i were to lose the data...that is still unacceptable.

reliability and redundancy is key...bad new travels fast in our business.

FWIW

Removable HD's would certainly give you a "leg up" on the competition . . .

If you are close to delivering a stable product between now, or between now and NAB I'd say "let 'em roll!" You can always do an "A" model sometime after that, right? Either way, as long as it doesn't delay introduction unreasonably and the price point is a reality number I'm in.

I just want to chime in and suggest removable drives as well. We'd also buy 2 upon release if this feature was implemented.

The Raid 1 sounds good too. How about Raid 1 and removable drives. That way you automatically have a backup drive that just goes on the shelf.

Thanks

David

If you think about it from a marketing perspective, having 2 drives and the option of the following combinations would surpass the capabilities of the proposed firestore unit:

option1: RAID 1 across 2 drives for security and redundancy
option2: only power one drive or the other and allow for sequential recording when 1 fills up
option 3: power both drives with the same data stream going to both at the same time, kinda like raid 1, except no need to strip the drives.

I've shot with the Firestore FS4 and it does work fairly well, but I always roll tape at the same time because there have been errors and problems that have come up from time to time.

nothing is foolproof... if the folks developing the cineporter are listening...please develop a redundant system...data integrity is just going to be the most signifigant differientator between you and other solutions.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all the suggestions.

For the large cameras, we have a bracket which mounts the CinePorter™ behind the Battery. You can get an idea from the drawings on our web site. You can also wear it on the belt or mount it elsewhere with the longer cable.

As I have mentioned earlier, Raid 0 will be implemented when the unit ships with the 2 HDD option. Mirroring will be available as a field upgrade sometime after the unit ships and will give you some more confidence when you want it.

Cineporter CP-2

Where does the Cineporter CP-2 attach on the h200 if it mounts on the bottom how do u use a tripod or does the Cineporter CP-2 have the holes for a tripod?

There is a Tripod mounting hole on the bottom of the CinePorter™ just like on the bottom of the camera.

David- is there any news in regard to anticipated availability? If not may I ask if you think you'll have a working (not balsa wood) model by NAB? Thanks!

Cine Porter

that is the answer to my prayers. with that tripod hole at the bottom of the porter I can now get the h200 instead of the 100b. when will the porter be for sell and how much and is it really 240 gb?

dregenthal,
It is our goal not only to have a working unit by NAB, but to also have Beta units in the field. We are working out a slew of compliance matters such as UL, CE, RoHs, etc... Since the CinePorter™ is going to be sold worldwide, this is of great importance. As these matters are resolved, we will be releasing more data such as size, weight and ship dates.

By the time the CinePorter™ ships, the 160GB and 320GB models should be available as well as the ones listed on our web site.

The 320gb is a must have for me. Please make a competitive price for it in order to make a HVX + 320gb cineporter as close as possible to a HVX + 2 8gb p2 cards... I can only see myself paying 3000 for this product (The price of a Sony fx1 hdv camera- ouch!)

Let's hope the cineporter comes in WELL UNDER $4400 . . .

Something around half that would make it competitive in the marketplace. My thinking is that the first one out the door (focus, spec-comm, citidisk) with a deliverable product (enough of this pre-order nonesense) will be the winner.
