cinemek's g35? what happened? lol

It is quite easy to make static adapter with less static grain indeed. The hard part is to get the diffusion to the right level where it's a good compromise between bokeh, grain and light loss.
This is exactly right. With the materials I'm working with, grain, bokeh, light loss and sharpness are interrelated. The Go35 Beta units were one thing, and I have made four revisions of the diffuser since then, each of them getting comments from purchasers that have helped me nail where I feel a good compromise can be made.

I think the current diffuser, the one Timur and a few others have, bests the beta diffuser in sharpness and light loss, but loses out slightly in grain. I'm currently making a new batch that will slice the margin between them even thinner.

Guys like MacGregor are the "secret" weapon of G35. If he would have gotten the original Letus35 beta adapter everyone would be running around crazy buying amazing used first gen Letus35 adapters because the best 35mm adapter footage has been produced with them...

o0o0o a side by side comparison would be nice. I wish norm or whoever can do a part 2 of the 35mm adapter Shootout but with more adapters this time around.

AMEN to that. Give macgregor a handycam and be amazed.

Jim,

The G35 definitely does lose some resolution, although I saw test charts posted where it literally looked like it didn't lose any. For some reason, it gets a lot sharper once you stop the dvx's lens down to f4.0 or f5.6 from wide open, but at wide open there's definitely a loss of sharpness.

As for static grain, most of what you see on the images I posted is the result of boosting levels in post, thus the dvx's noise. In the lamp you'll see some static grain, though, and also on the white bathroom whiles a tiny bit. Both shot at f2.0 I believe. At f1.4 it's much harder to notice.

Also, my DVX is working now! But I'm at school until Thanksgiving. I'd still consider putting the two side by side then, though. From what I've seen it should be close. And the G35 loses a lot of light, for the record, but I haven't measured it in stops. It "feels" like 100ISO or maybe 64ISO even, but the thing is that you have to stop the dvx down a bit to get sharpness, so it's worse than this if you want a sharp image.

the static dffuser adapters are nearly resolution lossless. I mean i shot a test char with the Go35, @ full open on all lenses. in the "dark". and it still read 540 lines. i think i posted the grabs somewhere, if not i will make some more tonight.

but ths time im gonna light it properly so it should read the proper 550.

It sounds like the DVX might be focused just before or after the GG. Could it be that once you stop it down, the greater DOF of the higher f-stop extends the focus "envelope" enough to bring the GG into sharp focus? Perhaps you might need a stronger achromat or diopter...?

doesn't the lens you use make a big difference too?
it seems like not many tests are being done with really high quality lenses. or at least there's not much emphasis on them.

i could be wrong, maybe it doesn't make a big difference...

it does. maybe like Zeiss primes would be overkill, but good lenses are needed to reduce vingetting, chroma abberasion etc.

I can vouch for the Go35 to a T. I just recieved my new diffuser but haven't had the chance to test it out yet. I've been extremely busy since I got my Go35 as it has increased offers ten fold. Don't believe me?? Look how many posts I had before I got my Go35 compared to after I got one, it's really gotten me wonderful opportunities.......

The Go35 is $650.00. $30.00 shipping/handling for domestic orders.

I don't think the Letus is static.

so,
are there any official statements from cinemek when to expect the release...?
Unfortunately, there hasn't been an official statement from Cinemek in many, many months.

I got to play briefly with a beta G35 adapter and it was a thing of beauty. I'm afraid the production models are quickly becoming urban myth. :(

I email Jon from time to time, and he's still working on getting these production G35 units out.

he told me he's waiting for some concrete dates before he can make any official announcements.

i bought a brevis, but I'm still keeping tabs on the G35...if it's taken this long, it's gonna be AMAZING!
