Cinematography with a crappy camera

Hey guys. I was trying to see what I could do with a crappy camera, and I came up with these results. I think it turned out pretty good. (It is a stupid fake commercial imitating 'Asics' shoes).

Sorry for the bad compression... but try to ignore it. Thanks.

That would be wonderful if I could get some feedback! Criticism is good! Thanks.

The cinematography was fine. The style and story was not to my preference though, so I thought it was boring.

That could be vastly improved by making the pacing faster, and cutting out the irrelevant stuff.

Cut it down to 30 seconds. I bet it'll be much easier to watch.

Alright. But it wasn't supposed to have a story. It was just a little test :)

Thanks for the criticism. I will probably make a quicker edit.

Thanks

Actually, I don't think I could make a 30 second edit. That would be awfully short for this video... Maybe a 45 second or 1 minute edit... but if you re-watch it, it barely gets started at 30 seconds.

By the way, the shakiness in the beginning was meant to recreate some of the more modern cinematography in commercials used these days. If anyone was wondering why it wasn't steady....

Thanks.

I've had to majorly cut down videos to meet a time constraint before, and the usually improve from it. The fact that it barely gets started at 30 seconds is because it has too much stuff. You would be fine with 2 seconds of him sitting down, a 1 second clip of him tying his shoes, and then another 1.5 seconds of him getting up and running off. Everything else is exterraneous.

Yeah, I bet if you cut it tight, you could get the thing down to 15 seconds. We only need to grab a second of the shot to get the feel and message of it. More than that and it gets boring.

It's pretty good SE7, but I would have to agree that if you tighten it up it would be even better. We're used to the fast pace fast cuts that the big boys down in Tinsel town are throwing at us so it wouldn't hurt to follow the mode.

I like your spin around the shoes shot. Not bad for a crappy camera...haha. What crappy camera did you use? I was just wondering.

Thanks guys! Okay I'll try to do that quicker edit. I think I have a disease... it's a rare one called 'quikeditaphobia'.. I always make things too long. I need to learn when to make quicker edits :)

As for the camera:
It's a JVC GR D70U... http://cgi.ebay.com/JVC-GR-D70U-Dig...ryZ20331QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
(this is not my ebay link by the way... just an example)

It's been pretty good for 4 years (lol) but has problems in low-light and has sucky quality.

Thanks again for all the advice guys!

Nice work. I used to shoot with the JVC d70u. After that, I got a DVX100, used it for a couple projects, then sold it to buy two HV20's.

Wow! Very nice. Worked your way up, I see... If you don't mind my asking, did you get the money for the cameras from film projects or from work?

agreed. Even though this is just a test, it would be a great test of your editing to get it down to a 30. And if you want an even more real world test, once you've done the 30, try and do a 15 version. Cause that happens a lot

yup, it's a bit easier to swallow. The music really lifts it off the ground and gives it life. But a major improvement from that 1:30 torture session. jk.:Drogar-KnockedOut(D
