Cinematography Opinion

Not bad. Although, a few camera motions kind of broke it down a bit..

The first glimpse you see of one of your charactors, isn't that clear..it's a bit dark(which is what you may have been going for), but just doesn't seem to come off as appealing or giving me the interest to want to know more..

And then there were a few camera motions when hovering around your charactor in the dark room while writing, that seemed a bit odd..

But it has some great potential, and with a basic lighting setup, you didn't do too bad at all.

Keep up the good work.

for me -as a experimental film it doesn't work - it feels more like a music video..
the music dominates every image ... IMO the main subject is the music not the images ....

cinematography - to really see the images i think one has to turn the audio OFF .... can't say much as the youtube image quality is diffiuclt to see clear images - can't see the details of the lighting ...

i do like many of the camera moves & C/U's ( found them experimental and refreshing)...
guessing i would say the lighting is much better then the youTube clip is letting us see ...
overall there is material here that could be presented much better then current clip ..
IMO work with material a little more - let the images take the lead at times ...

anyway to get a better quality clip up ?

I think yu had the right idea with your studio set ups and the two spot lights. However, parts of those seemed overexposed (like their backs) which I think draws attention away from there underexposed faces. Also the spots themselves on the foor seem a little too dominating and out of place.

Camera movement. I think the most intereting was the handheld stuff. It seems like the dollies were there for the sake of dollying annd hence drew attention to themselves.

The classroom. Lighting was too flat and it looked boring. Especially in comparison to your studio stuff. Maybe just some edge light and some fill woud have helped to pop them out of the bkg.

Thanks for the comments.

I like that everything thinks I used a studio. That was my high school theater with two ellipsodals pointed straight down (working there for 4 years paid off) and a bouce card bought at Staples.

One last thing, this is a trailer and the music I just picked because I liked it. I'm currently mixing the sound (all done in post) and someone else is working on the music (which isn't as dominate as it is in the trailer) for the actual movie. Hopefully it'll be done in a few weeks.

Jonny,
You mentioned in the classroom the lighting was kinda boring, and I do agree (it was nearly 100% natural lighting). However that's the early part of the movie and then the dark scene take place later and are designed to mimic the subjective view of the American student. My question is, where would you draw the line between having the two sections of the movie contrast sharply, versus having both of them still look well lit?

Again, thanks for all the opinions.

well... 'well lit' is different than two different looks. Just a little edge might just help pop them out a bit of the background - it wouuld still look very daylighty - don't you think? I think you would still have a lot of visual contrast between the two scenes.
