cinematography in 25p/24p

I've just bought my 100A two days back. The F6 has great filmic look. But, I think I'm not confident in shooting 25p since I faced strobbing problems at moving objects.

I tried using below or equals to 60fps shutter speed as many recommend to minimize the strobbing (is this true?) but it still quite seriously happening. The situation is, I zoomed tele all the way, no camera movement, shooting at a road with cars moving at slow speed (it's near traffic lights, so all cars just starting to increase speed). The strobbing looks bad; it's not like film; the edges went "mosaic-like" and not smoothly distort such as film does.

Beside this strobbing matter, does anyone know where I can get more information on shooting 25p/24p? I'm looking for some fundamental "rules" when shooting progressive.

Thanks!!

Re: cinematography in 25p/24p

I know that with my NTSC DVX, when shooting in 24P, the motion is identical to film (well, technically it's not identical, I think Barry said something before about film exposing different parts of the frame at different points in time because of the physical shutter, or something like that)...But for all I care it's identical!

Shooting 25P with a shutter of 1/50 should be basically the exact same...Did you watch your footage on a crappy TV?

Hi Mike,
Yes, I watched it on normal interlace TV. But that's what most people will be watching right? Do you mean that it may make a different if I captured the 25p video to computer and then output to a DVD/VCD and watch on TV (again, normal interlace TV) ?

Re: cinematography in 25p/24p

No, I was just wondering if you saw it on an objectively crappy TV, one that would add a mosaic-like pattern to film footage, too.

It just doesn't sound like what I'm used to with my DVX, I have absolutely no problem with the motion looking odd, and it definitely does look filmic...

Any PAL users out there? Don't know if I can help much more; I'm in NTSC territory...

Re: cinematography in 25p/24p

We had a massive thread about this several months ago. It seems PAL users complain at a much higher percentage than NTSC users. Perhaps there's something different in the PAL camera or such, I don't know. But I don't think us NTSC users can help you much with that...

Re: cinematography in 25p/24p

if you want to mess up with the shutter, take down (not up!) to around 36. that will add a little motion blur. anything higher than 50 is a high shutter speed = more """"strobe""""

Re: cinematography in 25p/24p

Select "Thick" helps a little (as recommended in the user manual). In fact, it looks fine in computer monitor (it's progressive anyway!).

hmm...I don't think there's a different with NTSC and PAL models. 24P vs. 25P just give not much different; there's no reason that Panasonic made bad PAL camera but good NTSC camera. Go to http://www.dvinfo.net/panasonic/reports/farr/ to see the test results from 24p; the test has exactly the same strobbing problems like mine.

Don't get me wrong. I love this camera after these two days testing. I'm just having less confident in shooting progressive because of the strobbing problem. The cine-like images were fantastic! I can't believe my eyes when comparing with interlace videos.
