Cinematic Shot Type Video - Feedback?

Hey guys,

I've been off the forum for a while because I just had my last semester of college. During this semester I did an independent study with my professor, Jane Winslow. I made this cinematic shot type video based off of Gustavo Mercado's book, The Filmmaker's Eye. It will be used as a teaching tool for the professors at SUNY Oswego. I know some of the info will be elementary to most of you, but if you wouldn't mind taking a quick look and giving me some feedback, I'd really appreciate it!

I used a whole lot of footage from my own works, then some shots from well known films for more complex shot types.

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm only two minutes in but it feels like you're really mixing the levels of education you're expecting. You describe a Close Up, which is something only a very, very uneducated cinematographer would need explained... and then you toss in terms like eye lights and ND filters, expecting the audience to know what those are. So what it comes down to is knowing your demographic. Are you making an advanced tutorial about various cinematography techniques for established cinematographers? Then lose the cinematography-for-dummies stuff. Are you making it for the general populace/total neophyte with curiosity for how filmmaking works? Then lose the jargon and any mention of any advanced technique (unless you're prepared to explain ALL of it step by step).
And if (as I suspect) you want to fall somewhere in the middle... make sure you've tailored your video and explanations to it.

I'll watch more later, my criticism aside it looks cool and sounds like a good idea!

Thanks for the honest critique. The video is for an intro video production course and it was made to show a shot type, then basically pause it and talk about what the students just heard. I wanted to throw in some other information so it would give more ideas to talk about in the classroom. I knew if I explained every little thing it would be an incredibly long video. Thanks for the feedback though, I appreciate it.
