"Cinematic Artificial Intelligence..." ? seriously?

Just came across this site in an RSS feed I have relating to education technology, not sure how it fits, but when I clicked on the link I found a site that had some pretty funny language regarding the promotion of their technology. Thought I would pass it on to the film community here to see if anyone feels their days are numbered as a director or editor because the computer does all this automatically now. According to Animato. Below are some quotes from the site. (http://animoto.com/)

"The heart of Animoto is its newly developed Cinematic Artificial Intelligence technology that thinks like an actual director and editor. It analyzes and combines user-selected images and music with the same sophisticated post-production skills & techniques that are used in television and film."

"Animoto videos have the visual energy of a music video and the emotional impact of a movie trailer."

I can't believe no one ever responded to this. Saw this through facebook and was blown away. Looks like I'm done doing slideshows. The results from this are spectacular... and I thought iPhoto made nice slideshows, ha.

I do wonder what will happen when this inevitably gets applied to video as a plug-in? Just mark in & out points, order them in a storyboard flow, and use features such as this site offers: spotlight clips/images, adjust speed, add text. Etc.

Automatic fancy barndoors slide show,
"that thinks like an actual director and editor".

Yeah right, all actual directors and editors make that exploded slideshows now.

Toy for the skateboard kids.

I had one of these things to do paintball films a few years back.

It always messed things up, putting clips the just played back to back. Using terrible clips.

It was faster to do it manually.

Well, this one isn't for video, it's just for photos. I think if done correctly - which it will inevitably - it will be possible to make some pretty fast yet good looking videos.

On this note though, for what it is right now - fancy barn door slideshow? I don't think so... have you even made one of your own? I tried it 3-4 different times with different music and photos and the results were fantastic.

Transitions, motions, effects go right with the music, and not in a predictible way. The motion effects are high caliber, not "fancy barn door." The features they've added include ability to choose order of images, highlight certain images to display more prominintely, and even soon ability to adjust speed even on slower or faster paced songs.

Apple iPhoto is a fancy barn door transition slideshow... this one is seriously cool and impressive.

As far as thinking like an actual editor/director... that's certainly marketing and nothing else... but there's no denying their automation software is pretty impressive. I would pay to have it as customizable plug in for photos, and when its ready, videos.

Well to do a photo slideshow, it would work.

Video is a different animal entirely. I bought one of those programs to have it compile videos. Of course, I had to go in and select the usable clips. And insert soundtrack and let it go.

Most of it was overly effected. It put greenlit clips back to back rather than spacing it. Some effects were way too crazy. The cutting didn't make sense sometimes. Worked with the music, just not with the other clip before and after.

I wasted more time messing with the program than cutting the video myself. It gives you more control.

For a skateboard video maker, or someone that needs a fast photo slideshow, use the software, if you want to do a professional looking video montage, edit it yourself.

Are we talking about the same thing here?

I'm talking about www.animoto.com

It's NOT even for video. All I was saying was, if this tech was PROPERLY applied to video (which has not yet been done)... could be interesting.

But right now I'm talking about ANIMOTO'S PHOTO SLIDESHOWS. And it isn't just for fast slideshows, it works well putting it to slower music as well. They have a free 30 second sample, I've tried it with fast songs, slow songs, friend/family pictures, sports pics and looked through their samples. Looks great with anything.

I like how it says IT ANALYZES YOUR IMAGES and it FEELS YOUR MUSIC.... but then NO TWO VIDEOS ARE EVER THE SAME.

lol. That sounds like just randomly throwing the cr@p together.

If there was such analytical power lying underneath, I would imagine the results would be pretty close for the same picture/music sets.

Why? Transitions can still be applied on a beat, just on a different beat. Different transitions, backgrounds, and effects can be applied at different times, randomly. It doesn't mean it isn't matching to the music.

Did you even TRY it?

Filmguy, I am not trying to discredit it.

I used a very similar software a while ago. I said "fast" in regards to fast workflow. For photo's it works wonders. For video - not so much. And I am talking about the other software I used. Muvee I think. Same concept for video and photo.

I used it extensively. Much testing. And it failed to produce a watchable product.

And, filmguy, I'm not saying it doesnt do transitions to the beat of the music, I'm sure it does. But applying random transitions to random photos to the beat of the music doesnt require great analyzing.
