Cinema EOS Announcement on 19th Jan - EOS R5C

Yes, definitely a JJ Abrams type of camera. Lots of attention-grabbing specs and an intriguing premise. But no thought to where it would go from there

R5C is the Force Awakens of Camera. It goes against expectation. “oh, you wanted IBIS? how about no”

But thankfully the price was a welcome surprise.

That price is what people dreamt off in the DSLR revolution. So much of pains people used to go through to get the ML thing work. While DVXuser experts are busy trashing the R5C some enterprising guys will buy two R5Cs and shoot their film in record time.

PS: I remember years ago some Russian dudes jumping from rooftops and beating the hell out of each other while wearing and filming with go pros. That film entirely shot with couple of Go Pro had gone crazy viral.

Don't get us wrong, it's a very cool camera. We're just nitpicking. But details matter

Are there only like 8 of us left on DVXUser?

There might be 8 people haunting THIS thread, but look at a thread on a different topic, such as Aputure lights, and you see a completely different set of people. And there are usernames I've never seen before posting dvx100b footage and the like daily. Then there's an unknown number of definite lurkers

if you notice, people trash Star Wars, and others enjoy it. Our work is not without criticism either.

I think Roger Deakins hates anamorphic and prefers to not shoot on film, other people love anamorphic lenses and love film and make a career out of them.

We can disagree with the R5C design choices, or at least the marketing slogan, but they’ll still be back ordered and get a number one seller on BH. Which means Canon will continue to make cameras with side sticking micro hdmi on this model, no evf on the other, and IBIS on the next, so you will own 3 or 4 Canon’s that could have been two or three.

I think i remember the Magic Lantern hack. Was that the one where if you wanted some raw feature you had to disable the autofocus and plug the camera in to a higher power source? ;)

That's that make the next Canon camera The Last Jedi? The camera to divide all Canon users forever.

Canon is not a camera company and it is not in it for the love of film makers. But film makers are resourceful and up against a million other film makers, so they will do whatever it takes and find a way.

Let’s rewind….

When Canon stumbled into the DSLR revolution they back pedaled hard and then announced the C300mk1 with some very obviously baked in shelf life, using the outdated digic DV 2 or 3 of the day. it was still a massive success in broadcast and docu worlds. Ironically not the Cine world or even the indie film world really.

So Canon avoided working with the nature of the DSLR and made a camera that appealed to anyone but the actual cinema crowd.

Then in 2012/2013 Canon announced the incredible (for DSLR specs) 1DC.

But Canon avoided adding 2K crop, or a 10bit or raw option for the s35 crop mode, despite that being the mode that most film makers needed. Film makers did not want or need jello 8bit 4K(APS-H crop). When Magic Lantern could have added the feature easily, Canon prevented that from happening

Now, each passing year, lack luster dslr and mirrorless options, including right up to the R5 overheating issue just recently.

Canon could not even deliver an enhanced s35 option for film makers, despite film makers still predominantly using s35 lenses, right up to this decade.

But now, with a huge sales slump and a pandemic, suddenly, out of thin air, Canon pulls out 8K FF35 RAW continuous for $4,500!!!!!!!! Their own rep in the CineD interview says how raw is actually easy for a camera, it is the bandwidth that is the issue….. so that means this whole time they could have been giving film makers a 2K/3K raw crop!

So how did Canon cripple the R5C for film makers? Better late than never, right? Well, in 2022, film makers are asking for dynamic range, even though 8K is a good thing overall, dynamic range is the higher priority. Now consider, according to DXO and most photography sites, iso100 is where they get the most dynamic range from cameras these days. In the past there was a leveling off below iso200, but it appears manufacturers are doing lower gain at iso100 and getting better SNR. Then why is Canon Log 2 not included at this lowest gain stage? Because it would give film makers what they want. Hanmer!

The C70 is perhaps Canon’s best version of the noise internet participating film makers have been talking about for the last decade or 15years even. But they hobbled the codec when announced and lopped off the EVF, and have the side sticking HDMI and mXLR. Sounds like sales were bad this year and they can throw a raw update to get any last undecided buyers to jump off the fence. All as a last minute attempt to get more sales before the next crop of high DR cameras are announced.

Canon doesn’t need to be defended, they are a corporation and pay millions to marketing to do that for themselves.

As fellow film makers on dvxuser, we help eachother navigate these different products and highlight their uses and their faults. And to point out how the Canon scheme is a bit of a financial rabbit hole of constant upgrades, FOMO, and cripple hammers. On dvxuser you can avoid the hype and still use a camera for a good purpose.

Film makers are up against the stiffest competition in the world with millions of people attempting to out do the next, so we are incredibly resourceful and can work with anything, even GoPros.

The R5 Ep8, the camera that can go anywhere and do anything, but is actually too jaded to do the things it is advertised as and decides instead to light fire to the jedi temple…..

wait, this is fitting way too well, haha

I’ve mentioned a couple years ago that the C3003 or C5005 and a R5 is one of the best duo combos in the working video world.

cine Eos caught up nearly to Red and the R5 can measure up in a pinch for all type of Broll and hard to get shots. Especially prior to the Komodo release.

Add now the C70 raw with the C3003 as another interesting combo, where they share the same sensor, plenty of opportunity there for anyone.

But that isn’t going to stop you from saying you need an EVF, so the C70 is a no buy.

When i owned a Red, i really enjoyed trashing the camera with directors, but then in the same meeting i might end up recommending it for the job, just depends. I know it is not cool to Say bad things about your camera, but i tend to. With my clients they appreciate the honesty and it allows me to choose the right camera for the job.

We’ve come a long way from the DVX100, yet i still might find a use for one some day.

let’s not be so worried about the camera’s feelings though.

In a previous post i briefly mentioned how the R5C might be the perfect camera for those studio shooots, where they are doing video and photo for an online catalog and they have to get through a hundred outfits in a day. the 8K vídeo and fans helps them get more shots with fewer setups, and they never have to worry about over heating. and with a studio location, the 12stops DR will be so far from a problem, and might even be an asset. I think there are so many uses for the camera, i just don’t think it was made for go anywhere do anything film makers, i think they just like the slogan, and it worked for the Arri Amira:

“Go anywhere, shoot anything” - Arri Amira slogan

LOL James. I agree and have a love/hate relationship with all my cameras. It's definitely best to stay camera agnostic even when heavily invested in system or two.

It's also funny you mention the DVX100 - someone just sent me some location pics of me with mine from nearly 20 years ago. She was lamenting the days when we traveled with a couple of bags of kit rather than a couple of hundred kilos. With the increasingly disposable nature on video these days I'm seriously considering a return to that mentality...

What happened? [If you'd like to share anything...maybe something in less than 280 characters, I don't feel like navigating through their conversation.]

I saw some stuff yesterday which struck me as out of line, but was pretty busy so didn't follow it properly. I thought Canon Rumours had been hacked, he attacked Gerald Undone and Jared Polin. Pretty sad uncalled for really. I couldn't make out if he was having a breakdown or had just lost the plot. I had a look earlier and it's all been deleted. Someone will have frame grabs. Sad stuff TBH.

he made himself out to be the victim. but he did say that people were messaging nasty things about his wife and family, which I don't approve of

He totally claimed he was the victim from what I saw, but he wasn't.

He was pissed at a few people on Youtube mentioning his rumour of the Canon R7 (or whatever its called). He felt that they owed he him something (they don't) and started attacking every man and his dog on Twitter. As meltdowns go it was pretty epic. I think he only has himself to blame.
