I'm having trouble figuring out how to use the allegedly included cineform codec with Vegas 6, not within the connect hd software but as the stand alone codec. what briefly are the steps?

you can use any of the HDV templates and that will use the cineform codec ..

or

you can render using it by manually selecting it ... say you use the DV NTSC template ... then click on custom .. Video .. look at video format and choose cineform ( max size is 1440x1080) ... using cineform you can make a 720x480 dv clip at 23.976 without pull down

Just to expand on what Donatello said because this is definitely not obvious at all. CineForm generates AVI files so first you have to use Render As and select a Save as type of Video for Windows (*.avi). Then in the Template field select any of the four HDV intermediate templates:
  • HDV 720-30p intermediate
  • HDV 720-25p intermediate
  • HDV 1080-60i intermediate
  • HDV 1080-50i intermediate
Or as outlined in the previous post, you can customize any template to use the CineForm HD Codec.

I thought those might be cineform codecs. Why do they use 25p instead if 24p?

25p is PAL progressive (i.e., half of 50i). 24p wasn’t part of the HDV spec when these were made. This explains why every camera maker has a different 24p implementation and they are all incompatible with each other.
