CINEFIST presents "Epic Movies on Micro Budgets" in Los Angeles April 7, 2010 @7PM
Hey all,
In an effort to do my part to curate films and nurture our film community, I recently began programming indie film events under my new distribution company, CINEFIST -- at the Downtown Independent Theater in Los Angeles.
Our last event was a lot of fun. The audience participated in a live text message vote after watching two trailers to pick the film they wanted to see next. That film was "WHAT'S UP LOVELY" and plays in May. We will do these screening events quarterly.
However, I also try to program more educational presentations for indie filmmakers and producers who want a sustainable career, or better, to thrive doing what we love. And I wanted to do it for a reasonable price so tickets are just enough to cover our costs of paying the venue, publicity, etc. Tickets are $10 bucks.
Looking to myself, something I'm eager to learn more about is federal and state tax credits and rebates. With the anticipation that Section 181 will be renewed this year, I wanted to focus on the great opportunities filmmakers have to use state tax credits and rebates to entice investors to fund their projects. Imagine telling an investor that the federal government let's you write off 30% of your investment and the state of michigan, if you shoot there, will give you nearly 40% of your investment back in a rebate after production -- essentially guaranteeing 75% of their investment in your film. The potential there is astounding and I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to know more.
So, I teamed up with a true "artist-entrepreneur" -- Justin Evans who will offer the following presentation: EPIC MOVIES ON MICRO BUDGETS - The Indie Filmmaker’s Guide To Tax Law, State Rebates and Raising Capital.
Your ticket covers you for the presentation on tax law and raising captial, and you are invited to stay for a Sneak Preview of A Lonely Place For Dying. and here's my favorite part: I have confirmation that James Cromwell & Michael Wincott will be coming to participate in the Q&A afterward.
Then we'll all move up onto the roof for a party, keeping the music low so we can mingle and maybe have some meaningful conversations. If you live in Los Angeles, I hope to see you there.
