CineAlta? RED? Andromeda? Hydra?

Since I don't have any of it... I don't know why, but I was wondering if you can edit CineAlta, RED, Andromeda, or Hydra footage in Vegas 7.

Well, CineAlta means many things now. It used to mean HDCAM (the name was first associated with the HDCAM F900), but now they've stuck that CineAlta badge on the XDCAM-HD F330 and F350, which record in HDV, XDCAM-HD, or DVCAM. And they're even putting the CineAlta badge on their new $8,000 XDCAM-EX camera. So when you say CineAlta you have to specify which.

For XDCAM-HD and DVCAM and HDV, yes of course Vegas 7 works fine with those. For HDCAM? No, you can't edit HDCAM footage in Vegas 7; Sony never released the HDCAM codec to NLE manufacturers. But you can still edit footage from an HDCAM source if you bring it in through a DeckLink card.

Don't know about Red footage. I mean, you can edit native RedCode in Apple FCP, but I would be startled out of my shoes if Sony Vegas supported RedCode natively in Vegas.

Andromeda and Hydra -- it depends on the output of SculptorHD. Sculptor has so far been Mac-only, but when/if the PC version comes out it should support exporting AVIs if I'm not mistaken, and if it outputs a standard video-for-windows AVI file then Vegas 7 should be able to edit it.

If you want to cut footage from the Red, yes get a Mac & FCP (at least until other NLE manufacturers show Red support).

Some Mac's come with FCP already installed right? My friend started dating some chick that uses FCP, I gotta see what the work flow is like... Vegas is so easy... heh...

FCP is not installed on any Mac, it's an additional purchase. I had a Mac, and frankly the workflow in Vegas was sooooooooo much more comprehensive, quicker, easier and (yes, dare I say it) better than FCP5. So much so that I sold the Mac off.

But it's a different world now. FCP6 is coming, and it finally supports a fully open timeline. And more importantly, it supports the Red. Vegas seems like it's heading in a more Sony-proprietary direction with every update, whereas FCP looks like it's opening up more. And something on the order of 95% of HVX200 users (in the US at least) are on FCP. So ... when the new Macs come out, I gotta get one, and just bite the bullet and learn the workflow. I'll miss Vegas; I'll miss it a LOT. But it's FCP and EDIUS from here on out...

You Can use redcine to convert your Red footage into an editable Quicktime format (Cineform maybe? If it works on quicktime/PC).

For Avid, the workflow is (likely) Redcine conversion --> quicktime DNxHD.

I'm not sure why you would say that Vegas can't edit Red footage.

Think of it as log and capture? In any case, this is mostly an issue of semantics. Both should be able to edit the footage. FCP will have the benefit of native editing. Call it whatever you would like to call it.
