Cinderella Man

i just watched Cinderella Man for the first time today. I'm surprised at how much crap it gets. it was a very good movie. it had heart and story and great acting and directing. Russel Crowe was phenomenal, and Giamatti was great as well. Hell, i even thought that Zellweger did good and i cant stand her acting at all. i'm buying this the first chance i get

I think nobody went to see this because it looked like a story they'd seen a thousand times already, and from a certain standpoint, it was. Very well made, but utterly predictable. I felt the same about Walk The Line. Very well acted and directed, but I'd seen the same artist grows up poor, gets famous, womanizes, abuses drugs, and dies or gets saved story too many times to be excited by it.

I'll tell you what, I'll be the voice of dissent here. Ron Howard has all the subtlety of a sledge hammer. We spend about 40 minutes establishing that times are tough, it's the depression, people can't get work, his kids are hungry, etc. Then when Braddock is on the ropes in a preliminary fight, he sees a series of flashbacks reminding us that times are tough, it's the dpression, people can't get work, his kids are hungry. Um thanks, we needed that. The real kicker during that flashback montage was an insert of a utlity bill with "over due" stamped on the top in big letters. I laughed aloud at the ludicrous imagery. I didn't hate this movie, but I would love to see what a more talented director would do with some of Howard's films ... Polanski directing A Beautiful Mind, for example.

I didn't care for this movie. The acting, fight scenes, the story all just sentimental crap. I could care less if Crowe won his fight and put food on the table.
The boxing films that I care about are Raging Bull and Rocky. These movies still stand out today, Cinderella Man came and faded away.
Ron Howard is over hyped, my favorite film from him is The Grinch and A Beautiful Mind, the rest are crap like Apollo 13 and Da Vinci Code.

Apollo 13 crap? wtf? i guess you don't like true stories being put into films? both Cinderella Man and Apollo 13 had a great story and was shown beautifully on the screen. Howard is a great director and always pleases with his films
