Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

I have been looking all over at matte boxes. I can't buy one now (wish I could) but I have to test for sure where I need to go with adapters and such once I get my DVX100a.

As I see it, the only one I can use if I need to use the pana anamorphic is the Chrosziel 411-53PK. At about $1500 or more, this is really going to hurt. If I don't need the pana, obviously I can find much better pricing.

Is their an option I have missed if I need to use the pana anamorphic? Any Ideas?

BTW want to see a pretty picture... http://www.saferseas.com/vsd/eye/411-53pk.html

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

that  box is the best available imho , and it has a back plate tha adapts for the dvx without the ana lense.. also has an optional sidewings kit. .. in the words of filmmaker
"buy the best and only cry once"

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Have you checked out the cinetactics MatteBlox review on the homepage. People have put velcro on the Pana anamorphic. and just used there large flag. Plus they are working on a whole system for the Pana anamorphic. At around 200.00 you wallet won't cry that much. And I belive it was fimmaker58 who said "buy the best and you will only cry once instead of everytime you pull it out" 8)

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

..yeah.. thats what i said ..see look up there at my post. what are you talking about.. its not as if i didnt take the time to go back and actually see who said that and just assumed it was someone else like lets say" berry green" .. why would i do that anyway..

:) lol sorry filmmaker. thanks for the quote. and thanks for the correction elvis!

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Very little doubt its the best, and even worth the price once I get stuff going, but that does little to make me feel good now. As for using the cinetactics, I really need to use more of a standard type matte box. I will be all over R/C air shows representing my sons R/C manufacturing business and I think it really would be better to have the "All Pro Look" around the crowd.

I guess all in all its not too big a deal, just hard to see the thousands and thousand roll out before anything starts coming back ;D -- Especially since it will only start to come back directly once I start DVD production a few months down the road.

Thanks.

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

What I said was it was filmmaker58 check my post ;D. By the way my Matteblox blows people away when they see the whole rig with a hoodman over the LCD. And they are coming out with it in all black! Darn it! 8)

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

You can't beat the price! Besides if you go the high road first its the $1400.00 Chrosziel than the $1000.00 follow focus then its the $500.00 Century gear for the camera then the $ 800.00 anamophic lenz. $ 3700.00 total that's a new 2nd camera!!! 8)
Oh  forgot the side flags I heard from 16:9 inc. were another $700.00 ouch!!!!!

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Seems I picked the right title for my post, huh? ;D

Not sure what I'm going to do yet.  I really want to go the right way and if it were to turn out I need the anamorphic adapter, Chrosziel is the only game in town right now.

As my son is investing in this venture, I've been talking to him about these inflated prices -- And not just from Chrosziel, but pro gear in general.  He almost thinks it would be better to setup shop and make one or a few.  He was getting a CNC lathe and milling machine for his R/C business in a few months, maybe he can get it sooner ;D

Anyway, I've got a few weeks before I need to get serious and I really want to spend some time testing about a million different things once my camera gets here anyway.  So I'll keep an eye out, and if something else shows up I post back here.

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

They're up there. I can't recall the exact price I paid, but you have to buy the wings themselves, and also the "mounting blocks" that they mount onto. These are little pieces of aluminum with screwholes you drill onto the side of your 411-53...

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Those commercials solutions look very sexy. But remember, it's what they do for you, not how they look, that counts in the end.

That being said, if you really need the functionality of a mattebox, why not throw together a ghetto rig that looks terrible but performs nearly as well?

I spent about $100 throwing together a dolly with rollerblade wheels and PVC rails which looks amateur, but the shots I get out of it look pro.

Kai, could you elaborate more on the sidewing installation? Did you have to actually drill the holes on the side of the mattebox for the mounting blocks?

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Oz That is what I've been told. But it is only plastic should be no big deal 8)

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Yes, I was shocked at first as well... but the drill points are marked clearly, and the plastic drills really clean and nicely.

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Roger.. IF you get a CNC your good to go.. the pricing is ridiculous for all matteboxs in my opinion.

Considering my Ghetto Rig cost less than $20, and my Miling maching is good old fashioned hand wheels, with a cnc machine you could probally make something that looks as good or not better than the real ones.

Re: Chrosziel Matte Box wants to hurt my wallet!

Well, CNC is the way to go for *any* production cycle over 1 unit ;D.

Like I said, don't know if I will yet, but if I do I would most likely go to CNC as we would also get into brushless motor manufacturing. This is something we've already done in limited quantities and we have a few prototypes we've custom built and tested with a power to weight ratio better then any manufactured units we can buy now.

It would be nice to make up a few matte boxes and sell them for 1/3 or less what a Chrosziel wants for the same stuff.
