Chrosziel Matte Box Question

I just picked up a Chrosziel Matte Box for my HVX200...and I notice when I zoom all the way out I can see the sides of the matte box in my monitor...is this normal?

Thanks!

Wow...guess I won't be getting one of those. That's totally unacceptable! What if you wanted to use a wide angle?

I have two Chrosziel matte boxes: 411-01 (4x3) and 411-53 (16x9) and neither one vignettes the image at all - I couldn't be happier with them.

One tip is to mount the box as close to the front element as possible. I use an empty 82mm filter ring (85mm OD) on the front of the lens to fit inside the matte box opening.

What is the purpose of one of these, such as the 450-HVXkit? What type of functionality does it provide to the HVX? Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks!!!

Maybe it is normal with the Chrosziel, but there are some on the market, where you don´t see vignetting.
I have a Geardear mattebox, www.geardear.com , you don´t see the edges of the 4x4" stage at wideangle.

I would be very upset without full wide possibilities...

It's not that it's normal on chrosziels, more that its 4x4's being used for 16:9 use.

The latest chrosziels are the 450 series. They are meant for 16:9 use. They are nice. I guess the question is which model chrosziel do you have, Thedwp?

I have a 411-53 outfitted with a 16:9 mask. The mattebox itself is a 4x4 but i still have no problems when zoomed out with my hvx. Maybe it's because i have my hvx lens as far into the mattebox as possible. I'm sure if I pulled it back I might be in the same boat.

For wide-angle, it really depends on how wide the rear opening is and the distance / angle from this plane to the frontmost edge of the sunshade.

100mm and 120mm are common rough openings. 16:9 native cameras, as a rule, are better matched with 4x5.65 and 5x5 boxes.

I remember dealing with this a few months ago or so... (search through threads)... But, the outcome was that when using a Chrosziel Mattebox 450-01 and the HVX200, you would have to remove the insert-mask. Once the insert-mask is removed, their is no vignetting... EVEN when using wide angles...

It's a surprisingly common problem... I've seen broadcast footage shot on BetaSP with matte box vignetting. One example I can think of would be the Bighorn Rally in Edson, AB, Canada. They shot it on two BetaSP camcorders, and one of them had a matte box that was too small for the lens - as the cars would drive by the cameras, the operators followed with the zoom. At full wide, the edges of the frame were cut right off by the matte box.
