Chrosziel clamp-on mattebox - adapt for HVX

Hey guys!

I bought a Chrosziel clamp on mattebox for my DVX a couple of years ago, (model 440-03DVX) and am just about to purchase an HVX. The mattebox came with a 104mm clamp adapter, 104:85mm step down ring, and 85:72mm step down ring which screws into the DVX lens.

Does anyone know where I can get an 85:82mm step down ring which will attach the mattebox to the HVX?

Has anyone used this mattebox on the HVX - anything I should know about?

Here's a link to it at EVS: http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=44003DVXK1

You could probably just swap out the 104:85 for a 104:82 (411-13 is the chrosziel part #)

Abel Cine Tech has them in stock but it is not on their website. They would also know if it would work.

85mm is the outside diameter of the lens; 82mm is the inside diameter and the filter size required. You can use an 82-72 stepdown adaptor on the lens then attach the 85-72 lens-hood looking adaptor to the camera lens to mount the Chrosziel.

Word of caution: the clamp-on sunshade adds a lot of weight to the lens and resulted in a costly repair bill to my DVX lens. I would only use a rail system with either the DVX or HVX.

Thanks for those words of advice.

It sounds like I should wait till I get the camera and have a look at it before buying something. My concern with swapping the 104:85 for a 104:82 is that it wouldn't have anything to clamp onto without the screw in stepdown. If the HVX is the same as the DVX, when you take off the lens shade that it comes with, you're left with just a small lip with notches for the lens shade in front of the zoom ring. Also, I think if the mattebox was to sit that far back the filter trays would hit the microphone.

If I used an 82-72 stepdown, wouldn't I be covering up some of the lens?

Hey fritz, don't worry about any more adapter rings, the MB should slip right on to the filter you have attached to your HVX. You should have an 82mm filter attached to your camera to protect your lens. My Cavision 3x3 MB has a inner diameter of 85 and it slips right on to my camera and it is a nice snug fit. Plus the filter stages will not interfere with the on cam mic. So if your MB has an adapter from 104-85 that will do just fine.

So, all I need is an 82mm UV clear I guess...that's a real load off my mind!

Thanks MDKfilms!!
