Chroma level and chroma phase

Hello all,
I recently read somewhere that if you turn down the color settings, in addition to the detail level, you will preserve your camera from additional artifacts in the highly compressed world of mini DV! Care to comment? Do you all think that turning down the levels in camera will help with artifacts? Best- Mike

Re: Chroma level and chroma phase

I do it if i know that I want it to be a desaturated image...but I'm the kind of person who likes to do everything in camera regardless...I haven't been doing it for a quality issue...

Re: Chroma level and chroma phase

This might be true, but the problem is that it's difficult to get chroma back if you go too low. If you've got a lot of reds in your production, it's probably a good idea to desaturate in camera anyway...as the reds are going to be the most difficult thing to capture accurately for video of all kinds.

I don't know for a fact, but I've heard from people that the issues they've had with chroma artifacts usually come in reds.

"Filmlook" these days is desaturated anyway, so it couldn't hurt too much to try out.

Chroma phase relates to hue, so you don't want to be messing with that or you'll start getting wonky colors.

Re: Chroma level and chroma phase

I found that on the original DVX100, Chroma Phase needed to be set to -4 in order for a test chart to line up properly on a waveform vectoscope...

Re: Chroma level and chroma phase

Michael thamks for confirming that. I shot something this weekend with it down to -4. The footage looks superb. There's lots to work with. Cheers- Mike

Now that's interesting...was this with straight gamma and none of that skin tone enhancing stuff on?

I'd imagine that any electronic process in camera could affect the chroma phase in slightly different ways, but I'd be interested to see if others have a similar or exact offset on their cameras as well.
