Re: Christo's The Gates - Pls Make My Pilgrimage

Ya know; I have to ask; me being one of art fans on the planet; what is this and why is it called art? I swear Im not trying to be difficult but just trying to understand.

They're fabric panels.

I dont get it. I'm just curious and I relaize the art I like my be crap to you.

Re: Christo's The Gates - Pls Make My Pilgrimage

Ah the power of minimalism on the grandest scale.  Why is the classical archetecture with the simplicity of form and function still a benchmark for structure and art?

Why cover a vast space with one man's vision.  On first glance a piece of fabric hanging from an arch... then, a simple piece of fabric hanging from MANY arches... then, a life altering gestalt representing the simplicity of life in it's grandest scale.

Or then again... not.

It's for each to wonder.  Some wonder in awe, some wonder... some don't.

As all art does, this will represent the creation, life and death of the human spirit... and be gone for ever.  And I'll miss it.

Carry on, Mighty Christo.

I love Christo's work and I wish I could go to new york to see it. I have actually never seen any of his work in person, always the wrong place at the wrong time. John, you ask the question that cannot be answered. why is this art. Personally I think that Christo is one of the most inluential artists from Neo Dada to Post Modern (he has been around for a while). I have a really cool book with lots of his work in it, but then again, i can ask the same question, why is this art. why is covering a magazine with Marlyn Monroe art? I'd rather not try to answer that one, as that is the problem with how the world operates today. What does one consider "art" today? the billboards, Hollywood movies, Reality TV (god forbid). Just to let you know John, this is not directed at you or your questions, they are verry valid questions, but can really be used to describe anything.

I can dig it.

I like:

I love Classic Realism; I love a painting that sucks you in that is so real you could swear it was a photograph. Landscapes, Oceanscapes, Cityscapes, anything that you swear is alive.

But my ultimate favorite is:

LUMINISM

Now this is what I like:

GOd, I feel like painting again; recently I have been having these attacks.

I guess that if Christo saw our films, he just might be harboring the same thoughts...

Re: Christo's The Gates - Pls Make My Pilgrimage

Well, its about the light, and the images, as aptly demonstrated by your previous post.

After all, the execution and artist's vision is vastly different than the impressions taken away by the observer/witness. Art doesnt have to be profound or monumental to be significant to the individual who sees something new with greater clarity.

Re: Christo's The Gates - Pls Make My Pilgrimage

I can dig it; doesnt mean I have to understand it; some people like crap and some people dont. And thats how I see it; crap. Movements such as:

Futurism
Minimalism
Fauvism

Now, I speak in general terms of course. I have seen some pieces in art styles that I actually did appreciate. But stuff like...

Pollock; creating his 'masterpiece' below. Serious; too funny

That's what I see when I see pictures and plans of 'Yellow Canvassess' strung over miles of Central Park; Give me a break. That's real profound and visionary. I totally respect anyones own likes and dislikes, but as mentioned? I just aint getting it and Im not buying 'seeing with greater clarity' and in the artists own mind and original vision.

It might 'look cool' but art? I guess; if thats what their calling it. Who am I to say it isnt, right?

But if we all liked the same styles? What a boring planet it would be.
