Chord to buy - need dual monitors for PC

Okay, i am working a new job and we are using a viewsonic monitor with an HP computer. I have a 24inch dell monitor I brought in that I would like to use as a dual monitor. The current monitor is connected with a DSUB cable and it works with both monitors. To get these monitors to work side by side I assume I need this DSUB splitter: http://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-Go...&qid=1355150038&sr=8-7&keywords=dsub+splitter

Since the chord is not long enough to reach both monitors, i assume i will also need a 2nd cable, would this work: http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-SVGA-Monitor-Cable-Ft/dp/B000V1JUIG/ref=pd_sim_e_2 - i dont need 25ft but would this whole setup work? I am also unfamiliar with PC's. Whats the best way to setup these monitors once i have everything connected.

Thanks guys! sorry for sounding like a newb

no, vga connector support only one monitor.
if you want extended desktop you need a 2nd output on the computer and since you have hires screens you need to make sure there is enough ram on the vga card (more than 256Mb).
check the VGA card if it gets a 2nd connector (VGA , DVI, HDMI, display port) and check computer if there is another display adapter on the motherboard.
if not, you can eventually add an usb disply adapter, but these ones are not recommended for video.

my main monitor has a DVI port and a D-SUB port. my 2nd monitor has a D-SUB port and a DVI-D port and a HDMI port. Any ideas on what to get?

absolutely not. that will only give you the same thing on both monitors.

in order to get extended desktop (i.e. different content on each screen) you need to have a video card with two outputs.

the inputs your monitors have dont really matter at this point in the discussion.
what you need to identify first is: does your COMPUTER have TWO monitor outputs?
if it does not - youre out of luck. or at least you'll have to buy a compatible video card that does. and thats a whole other discussion...

and by the way, its CORD. not CHORD. and the more accurate term would be CABLE

sorry im slow in this area. For the past 3 jobs I had they had a cable running from the computer to the monitor and then another cable running from that monitor to the 2nd monitor.

in 20 years in the design and video biz, ive NEVER heard of anyone doing that. im actually unaware of many (if ANY) consumer monitors that have pass-through capability. not saying it doesnt exist, just that ive not seen it.

and as far as i know- if that DID actually work, that process will only give you duplicate output (the same content on both screens). unless all these previous 3 jobs you had were using brand new thunderbolt monitors... which would be again, a whole other discussion.

i think you may have either been misinformed or you arent accurately explaining what you are trying to achieve...
