Choppy Video on Vimeo and Youtube, Facebook...

I have a Mac and I hate watching videos when someone posts something using Vimeo or even sometimes on Youtube. Its like the playback is very choppy. I usually will have to let the video load before I can play it and then its fine. I get this on Facebook sometimes. Is this because the video might be in a HD format and my screen isn't a HD screen? I use a HDTV ready television as my computer monitor. Do I need to go get a HDTV instead...would that make the difference or is it how my Mac is processing the information in the video? With Vimeo, Facebook and Youtube, I do know they give you an option to turn the HD off which seems to help playback play smoothly. I just want to get to the bottom of why certain videos are choppy when trying to view on those sites.

That definitely suggests bandwidth related

It might be server side related (i.e. the hosting site like youtube or vimeo cannot upload to you fast enough) , or client side (your bandwidth isn't sufficient as Jordan_S mentioned)
