Choppy playback with native gopro files

Hi, I'm experiencing quite a lot of choppy playback from gopro hero4 video files.
This is not just limited to footage shot in 4k, but even footage shot in 1080p (60fps)

The issue is more pronounced if I try to playback the video in reverse too. It plays smoothly for about 5 seconds and then starts stuttering. Slow playback (K+L) is even worse.

I've noticed that the CPU usage goes up into the 90% range when playing in reverse, and 50-60% when playing normally. I'm assuming that the bottleneck is CPU, although I would have thought my system would be able to handle it.. The specs are:

Core i7-4770 @ 3.40 GHz
32GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760

Windows 8.1
Premiere Pro CC 2014

OS/Apps on SSD drive.
Footage on standard HD
Media cache on different HD

Do I need to upgrade my CPU or something else?
Is there something else I can do to improve performance? Or do I need to transcode the files as a workaround?

What NLE are you using? It sounds like your GPU is not being used as it should. Transcoding compressed video files to an all i-frame intermediate codec like Prores or DNxHD reduces the processing load significantly for NLE's and reduces artifacts in SFX transitions. Cliptoolz Proconvert is a good inexpensive option for this.

Premiere Pro CC 2014.
If I continue to have trouble, I'll have to try transcoding. I was hoping to work with the files natively though
