choice: sony hdr-fx1 .vs. apple power mac

I dont see the FX-1 being any more suited to field use than the dvx. I use an fx-1 a few times a year for a client and have never been horribly impressed by the build or usability (not a fan of sony menus or tiny menu scroller). and no xlrs...

Quick off topic note on something mor10 said; The analog TV shutoff in 2009 doesn't mean that the US (or anyone else for that matter) will be going fully HD .. in fact, some of the biggest markets of growth are mobile & web media, which are normally less than SD. The FCC only require full power TV stations to go to Digital, but that can be SD or HD - many stations are dooing both.

SD itself is here to stay.

just a clarification: The reason I'm saying the current situation will probably change once the US goes digital is that many of the smaller scale production houses and cable stations will be forced to buy HD equipment to keep broadcasting and selling their content. Since most of these don't have massive budgets they will most likely go for prosumerish cameras and that will quickly force the industry to consolidate and agree on one compression standard - otherwise the incompatibility problem will become a nightmare (this btw is not my analysis but that of a broadcast engineer who is working on the implementation end of the transition)

I do agree with the statement that SD is here to stay tho, because as Mikko says much of today's production is for web and other media anyway.
