Chocolate: Martial Arts Goodness

Watched the new Thai film Chocolate last night. The storyline was OK as far as martial arts movies go but the star, Jeeja is an incredible martial artist. I know there are some other good female fighters but Michelle Yeoh doesn't get that much exposure here and Zhang Zi Yi technically doesn't even consider herself a martial artist. (She's a dancer.)

If I remember correctly, this is Jeeja's first film. It's by the same guys who did the Ong Bak movies with Tony Jaa. She's does a lot of environmental stunts a la Jackie Chan and has some pretty harsh finishers a la Tony Jaa, mixed with some stuff that she can get away with beacuse of her size. As a pure brain shut off enjoyment film, it is quite enjoyable. Check it out.

Anybody else seen it?

Sorry to dredge up dead threads ... but this film is brilliant.

Just saw it about a month ago ...

I'm not much of a martial arts movie fan ... but the combination of an autistic (and BAD ASS) female lead with the simple premise of having to collect all the money owed to her Yakuza assaulted parents ...

Well ...

It's just a glory to behold.

The woman who plays the lead, reportedly, trained two years prior to shooting simply to be able to pull off some of the stunts/scenes in the film.

And do yourself a favor ...

Watch the "extras" on the DVD ... people were frequently hospitalized (including the lead) in the making of this thing.

I saw the Ong Bak movies after Chocolate and was not as impressed ...

Chalk it up to getting to see two mentally challenged (gifted?) combatants go at it in one film ... but I liked Chocolate a lot more ...

:)
