Chinese 2K RAW S35 Cinema Camera, 8000 dollars

Odd sounding marketing info, almost as though they've never heard of other current digital cameras.

"Tests have shown that there is minimum degradation in performance after hundreds of uses making Digital Cinematography with KineMag (tm) much more cost effective than shooting movie film. Video tape is obsolete, move up to all Digital Cinematography and shoot directly onto KineMag (tm) for your next project".

Cheers.

If kinefinity is looking at this threat I hope they implement at least a 60p burst mode. What I mean is that a 60p only for a few number of seconds or minutes. The thing is that we are in the age of slow motion, and not having 60p even for lets say 15 second would be a big disadvantage. If it was a $ 1000 camera I would not mind, but for a $ 8000 investment it is another thing. You can already see a lot of the, hey the scarlet does 120 fps.

Dynamic Range also is very important, I saw somewhere else mentioned 11.5 stop which is a little higher than DSLR. The higher it is it will be better because the F3/Red/Alexa are more like 12.5 to 14 stops. This is where you earn the cinema camera moniker.

Darn, They beat me To it.... I was going to Reverse Engineer a red Epic , and Call it BLU... using China to Build it..... O well. saves me the headache

It's funny how it's acceptable to badmouth a camera manufacturer that previously specialized in low noise, high sensitivity astronomy cameras, but to badmouth a manufacturer that previously specialized in sunglasses and fashion items is one of the biggest sins you can commit around here.

I know someone that is really interested in this camera - if it can hold up in terms of image quality and reliability. Will really be keeping an eye on this, and the Scarlet of course! :cheesy:

Please keep the Red comparisons out of this thread and keep the discussion focused on this camera. There is a whole forum dedicated to Red discussion, so please take it there. Thanks.

So, who makes this camera anyway? Why don't they post here?
Altough China is a glorious contry they never had an established cinema camera manufacturer like Arri, Panavision,Aaton, Konvas,etc...

BTW...anyone remembers Kinor? They promised 2k and 4k digital cameras years ago, but they still didn't deliver anything...

Just read the rest of those comments (a couple more since when I first read it) and see Dan Hudgins also posting there - getting the news around, nice. The latest comment from the same "Marvin" fella: "NEWS UPDATE:
According to one of the developer of KineRAW Digital Cinema Camera, they are considering the feasibility of adding 60fps@2K RAW, let’s hope this can be successfully implemented!"

So, who makes this camera anyway?

The camera is manufactured by Kinefinity™. They are self-described as "a team with passion, concentration, vision and technical background from high performance astronomy camera design."

Why don't they post here?
Seeing as purpose-built astronomy cameras aren't really a hot button issue around here, and they live in China, they probably had little reason to know that this place even exists.

That and, from the looks of it, they are not overwhelmingly confident in their ability to speak English...which is perfectly understandable. I took three years of Japanese in college and I still wouldn't run around posting on message boards.

Oh, and they may be mostly engineers and technicians. It sounds like they are cutting costs pretty carefully (they had to be talked into buying a Grey card, remember) so they may not have anyone on staff to handle PR.

Well, I'd say it's one thing to have an established manufacturer and an established camera brand. China makes a LOT of cameras. And even more camera components.

BTW...anyone remembers Kinor? They promised 2k and 4k digital cameras years ago, but they still didn't deliver anything...

Sure. As I alluded to, there has been a slew of startups, all looking to offer a 2K and/or 4K RAW digital cinema camera for a great price. So far, no one has really delivered in the sub $10K market. Ikonoskop is just barely there - the camera body is ~$9,900.00. So it turns out - building a digital cinema camera actually is difficult. Especially on a budget!

Sounds like the most reasonable explanation. I can imagine they're running around like headless chickens at the moment...

It's much easier for a chinese to learn English than for an european or american to learn chinese, japanese, etc.
English is studied pretty much in all China.
I'm pretty sure they know enough English to post on a forum.

I spent two weeks in Japan earlier this summer, more or less "going Japanese" (one week church project, one week disaster relief, so no luxury of being a tourist). It may be easier for an Asian to learn English, and Lord knows their English was better than my Japanese (which doesn't exist), but being taught English and being fluent enough to post on a web board that they probably didn't even know about until recently are two entirely different things. At least my experience in Japan... lot's and lot's knew basic Engrish, but not as many knew English at a proficiency to be conversational. I would expect an engineer in China who would probably have less exposure to Americans and Europeans to be even less so. I'd cut them some slack.

Please please please keep the political conjectures/assumptions/opinions/stereotypes/generalizations out of this thread. We have a zero tolerance policy for politics. If you are missing a post and wondering where it went it was deleted.

I speak Chinese. If anyone has questions they'd like to ask, I could contact them for you. Although, I am sure they have great English too, I'm sure speaking to them in Chinese doesn't hurt. Send me questions, and I'll contact them.

Thanks again for your input, Dan. That's really appreciated. This camera is shaping up to be very interesting. It may not turn out to be something I want to own - I'd rather pay for memory which fits my criteria than have the advantage of lower costs along with it's disadvantages. It all depends though.

Dan, do you know or have access to a data rate chart for 2k Cineform DNG at different compression ratios?

Edit: just kidding...I found the chart I needed. I'm used to looking at 4k and 5k data rates, so I forget how relatively light 2k data rates are, especially at 10 or 12 bits. Perhaps their solution would be workable. Different, but workable.
