China Ball Question

Hey, like I said about my DIY lantern lock, I'd have one for everyone to make, and it's cheap and easy and sufficient. Well, nothing against the guys who originally came up with the idea, but WoW, I've built my own for less than 10bux(not including china ball). I'll post picture by this week hopefully. I don't have access to internet. The parts consist of 3things. Anyway, I'll get some pics up for you guys and hope it'll work for you as well.

all the best

I'm also looking forward to it.

Hey guys,
I just ordered some nylon lanterns from paperlanternstore.com,
and now i'm looking for some bulbs to stick inside them.
i found two on filmtools.com but am note sure which to go with.
the tungsten photo-flood bulb here,
http://www.filmtools.com/ect50tunphot.html
or the halogen daylight balenced one here,
http://www.filmtools.com/nehoba2532qu.html

i know the halogen will last much longer than the others, but my concern is that it will not be bright enough. has anyone used those bulbs before, and are they bright enough to put in an 18" or 24" chinese lantern, or would it bebetter to go with the tungstens?

Just a little update:

A few months ago I mentioned that I shot a feature with the china ball setup and then a while later I posted a couple BTS pics. Well, a trailer has finally gone up. If anyone's interested in checking it out, take a look below. You won't get much of an idea about the lighting, as the trailer is rather short, but what the hell.

I'm bringing this thread back to life to find out if anybody has used the 24" lanternlock with the 200W bulb at servicelighting.com. It seems like the bulb might hit the diagonal brace of the lanternlock. Also, has anybody found a flourescent tungsten balanced solution (similar to the service lighting bulb).

We (Tim Young) and I are putting together a new china ball kit for Love Fest .

We will most likely be using:

Avenger C - stands

24" Mogul socket lanternlocks

Avenger mini booms

24" nylon lanterns

and of course some sand bags.

Anyway, we are still trying to figure out the best options for high wattage fluorescent bulbs at 3,200K and 5,500K (So we don't have to fumble with the fluorescent tree, which can be a pain).

Thanks for any help.

I'll have the 200w 8U bulb for sale on my site by the end of December (or so). Available in 3200k and 5600k, 110v 60hz only. Will be $59 for the bulbs each and if you buy the kit (CL-SFT1 fixture, softbox with grid and one of the 200w bulbs) that will be $125.00.

Richard:

What CRI rating are your bulbs? Are they mogul base and do you know if they would fit in a 24" lanternlock? The diagonal support rod is what concerns me:

24" Lantern Lock

Would it be possible to get your bulbs by the last weekend of December? We're planning on shooting that weekend.

Thanks,
Tim

My bulbs CRI rating is 90 and yes they are mogul base. Looks to me like it won't fit. They obviously changed their design on the lanternlock. It seemed like the old one would have fit but the new one seems to not do so. Kind of silly to make such a design and limit the fixture to only a bulb of a certain length.

You can make a harp yourself of course. We've seen how to do it before in there. Ian Dart of Australia was kind enough to show us a DIY design he came up with.

I hope to have my bulbs will be available in that time frame you mention.
