Chimera, Matthews or Advantage compact 48x48 frame?

I have the chimera. If you're really strapped for space and weight, they're really great. You need a 2.5" grip head and hooking onto that is a little fiddley but they are light and the grid cloth is nice.

Honestly, I'm grabbing a couple of those advantage ones. They look great.

Posting just so I'm following this thread. Need some of these!

So you just cut 4x4 pieces of opal, 251, 216, etc. and have them standing by reading to tape up? And they don't get destroyed? Looks too cool.

If someone could make a 4x8 piece of duvy that went together with this and emulated a 4x4 floppy I would be so into that lol.

I've used the Chimera frames for years. I have several 4x4's and 6x6's. Set-up quickly, break down compactly and are very light weight. BUT they are not the heaviest of duty frames. I don't know how many corners I've had broken when one was knocked or blown over "at height" while attached to c-stands, though. The metal they use in the corners could definitely be stronger, but I still like them, buy them and trust them even on the road/travel duty.

I bought the chimera frame and returned it. I didn't think it was all the sturdy outdoors with the wind and what not. I got the matthews road flag kit its as close as you can get to a full and sturdy 4x4 kit that fits in to most cars.

The only Chimera frame that I've lost to wind(the 'wind' itself breaking it) was when a Blackhawk helicopter landed less than 50 yards from where we were set-up. We were informed about it literally a minute before we went LIVE and could not move. Someone grabbed the frame, but the rotor wash just snapped it in half. Most people don't fly anything above 10 mph sustained winds, so you don't have anything to worry about, because you're NOT going to be flying ANYTHING in winds even a fraction of what the rotor wash off of a military helicopter is.

You might also look at the scrim-Jim products. Not the most sturdy, but setup and breakdown is easy and there are many slip cover products to fit.

Ended up shelling out for the Chimeras. Mainly bc they break down small enough that I can throw 2 4x4 frames into my hardshell tripod case for air travel.
