Chillow and Hard Drives

Hey all,

So, I'm driving x-country and bringing a couple hard drives in a cooler. I'm trying to think of a way to keep the hard drives cool during hot days in the desert (without introducing condensation). Has anyone had any experience using a "Chillow?" If not, could anyone see any problems this product could cause when kept in a cooler with Hard Drives?

Thanks,
Josh

I had a chillow last year - basically you fill it with water and there is a thin sponge inside to keep water from sloshing around and making like a water balloon. The plastic cover with the water, does keep your head cool when you sleep with it.

Having said that, it doesn't maintain a very cool temperature. I put it my refrigerator every night to make it cooler, but the coolness doesn't last as long as I had hoped. Also, it is not intended to have anything sharp near it. So, if you are putting something like a hard drive on it, you risk puncturing it and I think the results would not be good. I think you might be better off with some other alternatives.

Last year, I bought a Thermipaq -- it is a cold pack that is clay based, and it maintains a really cool temperature. CVS and Walmart has it for around 10.00 You will still have to put it in the freezer first, but if it were to ever puncture, you won't loose your equipment.

Thanks Rok,

I ended up taking your suggestion and using a Thermipaq, which sometimes kept things too cold! Ultimately, I kept the Hard Drives in the boxes they were originally shipped inside, which was then placed in a cooler with a Thermipaq. So far, so good!

Thanks again,

Josh
