Chewed up film effect...

I have a clip of some really old film footage that has that cool old junky look to it. I want to play it and then have it suddenly speed up and get f-ed up and fade/burn to white or black, so that the effect is as if you are watching an old film reel and the film suddenly gets chewed up by the projector or comes of the track or runs out.... get what I mean? Just wondering if there would be an easy way to accomplish something like this with a velocity change and/or a couple of built-in transitions.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!!

My initial thought is this:

Build a LONG film strip in Photoshop. Using your velocity envelope you could control the speed to speed up, slow down, etc. ... but as far as it coming off it's track & the burned/chewed up look ... Best bet in my mind is using one of the SpiceMaster transitions, as they have a pretty organic look to them & then using the parent/child levels in your tracks, combined with putting multiple clips of your image (set velocity envelope to 0 for each frame you want showing) placed in the film strip ... then using the parent motion tracking, move it up & off track, etc.

Probably sounds like a mess the way I'm describing it, but basically, create an element in Photoshop to use (film strip), velocity envelop to taste, and parent/child tracks ... for somekind of organic burn, SpiceMaster probably has something as well as others.

who was it that did this effect? (it was like a commercial for a camera, and had a whitestripes song in the background).

Someone did exactly what you are describing. I believe they bought some stock footage of film slipping and cc'd and stuff to make it look old. I'll try to dig up that post. It wasn't too long ago.

Hey, thanks guys. dj200423 - let me know if you find that thread. I know I have seen this before as well -- just can't remember exactly where. The only thing that is coming to mind right now is the Muppet Movie -- I think "Animal" eats the film or something... :) -- I may have to go rent that and see if I can find the part!
