Chelle (two pics)

Shot another model today. It was pretty hot out and the sun was really bright so it made it somewhat difficult to not over expose the sky but still get a good exposure on the model. That and not having the model squint because of the bring sun. Never the less I think the shoot went well. Here are two photos from it. Criticism welcome.

i think what caught my eye about the first pic, is that theres no balance in it. while it is very interesting, the bridge in the back is falling to the right, and the poles shoot to the left, along with the twisted fence going all directions. the cars also dont really help the shot for its composition.

there are tons of instances where within the chaos lies the harmony, but i dont think this is one of them. But i think you can , if my criticism even makes sense and is warrented, seeing as im clearly no pro, fix pretty much most of what i think is wrong with the pic , in photoshop.

thats just me looking for something to try and help out. great exposure and technical stuff. the shots are very pro in all qualities.

There is a woman in the photo and you are looking at the bridge?
I didn't even notice the bridge there.

I dont know man. I personally LOVED the first pic. Could it be better without the garbly gook in the background? I don't know. I'd have to see it first. But I love the DOF, the composition, that fence is a WAY cool back drop.

As for the second one, again that is great. Crisp, loved the blurred violet/blue background...I just wish though there was a way to get just a hint more light to reflect from her eyes. Maybe dodge and burn tool?

As a portrait though, I think its great. If its a headshot...lets see the eyes.

thanks for the critique.

Cynic, I would have to disagree with the no balance. While it is not symmetrical, the fence draws your attention immediately to the woman. I wish I would have placed her more to the left so she would'nt be so much center. I've been going back and forth on whether I should crop it. When I crop the photo it frames her much better but it also ends up losing something. I can't really put a finger on what it is though. I think I'm going to go back and edit it and take out the blue bug car and try to find a cropping that works better.

I'd love to see what you could do with this photo in photoshop so I can get a better idea of your critique. Thanks!

good idea. I completely forgot about the dodge tool. I couldn't agree more that we need to see her eyes more.

So I've cropped the first photo two ways. Let me know which one you like better. I think it definitely looks much better without the clutter on the right.

I also touched up the second photo by dodging her eyes to give them more light.

Now we are talking. They look fantastic. The cropping totally works as does the Dodge. Really subtle but effective!

rim, may I ask what your name is? I really appreciate the comments you've given me over the last week on my photos. It's great having that second eye to point out things I've glossed over or forgotten about. I'll have to go back to my other photos and dodge the eyes as well because that small adjustment just brings the photos to life.

By the way. If you look closely at the second photo you can see my reflection in her eyes.

Yeah, I can totally your reflection. I wasn't even sure it would work but it TOTALLY does. So, glad it worked for you.

Rick Meyer. I keep meaning to change my avatar name because RLM7189 makes no sense to the general public. But, alas, I keep forgetting....

Nice shots. I really like your first crop. I think what was wrong with the initial first shot of the model was that she gets lost in the background. She ends up competing with the fence and the sky and the blue car in the background.

Your first crop gives her the frame and draws my attention. I like that it's centered too because the background is so engaging that it draws you away from her.

 totally agree.

I like the crop of the first image.

Can also include the ISO, aperture, and Shutter speed. And maybe the format it was shot on? Thanks!

camera: 30D with the lens 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM

ISO Speed: 100
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 24mm
Shutter speed: 1/800

Then I did the post processing in the RAW editor that comes with Photoshop CS3

I gotta upgrade to Photoshop CS3. I have Photoshop CS and I am having a real ***** of a time trying to get it to read my RAW files. Even with the program that came with my XTi.
