Checking MacPro on a plane

I'm thinking of picking up a MacPro but I know that I'll be moving to Costa Rica next spring for a year and I'd want to take it with me. I talked with the apple store and they seemed to think if I put it back in all it's original packaging it would be fine... but I'm wondering if anyone out there has tried this and would share their experience.

Thanks!!

Heh heh... MacPros on a plane! :cheesy:

I've not checked a laptop before but if were to do so, I think I'd want to disguise the original box it came in so that it didn't scream, "Please steal my computer!". Can you put it inside its original box and then place the box inside a large suitcase?

Yeah, I'd definately disguise the box. Those things are pretty big though, I don't know that I'd be able to fit it in another suitcase. You mentioned a laptop, may be worth mentioning I'm talking about a tower.

Thanks for the input though!

D'oh! Yeah, I was thinking laptop for some reason... (still getting used to the new terminology - MacPro...).

Will FedEx or UPS ship it there for you?

Dude, if you check your laptop it will be smashed. Smashed into a million expensive pieces.

OMG Macpro's on a plane!
"Lets get the Motha Fkin Macpro's of this Motha Fkin Plane!"
"We need to make a barrier between Us and the Macpros!"

Couldnt resist, I would just ditch the Fancy white cardboard and put it in a regular box.

im sick of these on this

I would carry it on and never ever check it. It could be damaged but more likely than anything it would be stolen. Heck it's so tempting- let me know when you are leaving and I might be taking it.

My suggestion....order the Mac Pro from the Apple Store online once you get to Costa Rica. Where are you going anyway? My wife and I got married on the beach in Manuel Antonio - somewhere every human alive must go at least once - a rainforest on the beach, simply unbelievable.

Yeah, don't even think about checking a computer on a plane.

Just eat the cost, and have it FedEx'd to you in Costa Rica.

We're going to San Jose, problem with shipping it via DHL, FedEx or UPS is that the cheapest rate is 660 bucks... Checking it I'd probably pay 80 for excess weight.

Take out the hard drive, put it in you carry-on. Check the box in INCONSPICUOUS package.

I fly every week, and I see major TV networks people at the airport ALL THE TIME, checking their $5,000 tripods, monitors, all sorts of gear - they usually take the cams on board, though. I think that in US and Canada, theft is not as much a problem as accidental damage. That's why you don't want to have your HD inside the box. The rest should be fine, IMO.

Hi, I live in Costa Rica and I broght my PowerMac 65 from the states about a year ago. From my experience is not that great to bring big computers to Costa Rica for two reasons:
1- Shipping fees
2- Taxes

Even if you get to bring the computer to Costa Rica, you will be charged with a lot of taxes, i think its 13% of its new value. So this is my recomendation:

Take of your mac everything you can (Memory, HDs), you can make up it a little (paste some duct tape on it, dust it a lot, make it look old) Buy a really big box, NEVER use the original box (More Taxes), put a lot of cushioning material inside and check it in at the airport. If they ask you, say that you are carryng just repair parts.

BEFORE you go into the airport print a fake invoice including the supposed prices for the equipment (say less than $500, because less than this you wont pay taxes) carry the invoice in your suitcase but don't take it out unless they ask you to. After this, pray.

It is almost for shure that the box will get in perfect conditions to Costa Rica, I've been robbed more times in the states than in CR. The only problem you might get is that they hold hte box in customs and you may have to pay some taxes, that's what the invoice is for.

Good luck!!
