The guys over at Ancanar.com have posted a new development trailer. For those unfamiliar with the project it's a student film placed in the same sort of atmosphere as Tolkien's _Silmarillion_ that got some real funding due to lots of fans (over 1million downloads of the original trailer in one day). The new footage is pretty nice :). I love the look and the SFX are spectacular.

The best thing about this film though is the story. Absolutely well done. The trailer contains a single scene (along with some other stuff) and it really does grab you.

There were a few things I may have done differently camera wise (for instance there is a part in the forest that is underexposed though I think it was very much intentional. There's also some slightly shaky cam stuff but I think that was intentional as well because most of it is rock solid.) but damn! Impressive!

Interesting trailer. Cool to see a fan film turn into a big production.

They say they shot on a XL1 for the original work but will be switching to HD or 35mm. Their reasoning is that they want to the resolution for a film release.

the music towards the end got weird... didn't match. But i was impressed by the overall look of it. that was XL-1? dang.

was that the XL1 if so it just restates the fact of it's what what you have it's how you use it. I only ask cause I read that they had the xl1 when they started the project... but that there refilming it with more Pro Equipment? So I onder if that is the XL1 or a highend camera... regardless it does look cool,

No, I'm pretty sure that was the Panasonic Varicam :).

I love the SFX :). Really good work. I thought the music toward the end was a little strange as well but honestly, I think it fits with the feel they are going for.

Yeah, it's definitely low budget. Still, not bad for extremely low budget :D

heck $20 thousand dollars is not low budget! Well at least for me it is. That can't be no Varicam they shot on. If it is, I'm disappointed! It looks XL1 or maybe 2 at least.

Overall, it does look pretty dam good! Probably the best looking "moderate" budget film I've seen in a while.

I think it might actually be a mix of new stuff (varicam) and old XL1 footage. I don't know for sure.

20K is really low budget for that type of movie! To do fantasy - and do it well - costs a LOT of money! There are things I don't like but what really makes this stand out in my mind is that the story and characters are good; which as we all know if rare. At least, I think it is goood :)

ya definately not low budget... I could accomplish a lot with 20k!
but it lokos amazing.. special effects look sweet as well

I'd like to see the raw footage to see if it was an XL1 or not
either way, amazing job

Hi all,

been away from the 'boards for months now, I'm afraid work called me away before I could write new VFX tutorials.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words re: the new Ancanar trailer. I work on the film and website, and we're getting slammed right now with traffic. Hope the server doesn't blow a fuse. :)

The reason I wanted to post is to let you know that (almost) the entire trailer was shot just weeks ago on the DVX-100A. Great cam, we love it. So that I'm clear about the production - yes this started out as a low budget 20k project, and because of the attention we've gotten since, we're in development to shoot an extended version of the script w/ studio $$.

I'll close by giving a special shout out to everyone at EVS! You guys rock.

Ah cool :). The DVX held up well in the SFX shots!

When are you guys going to start shooting HD or 35mm stuff?

Yes, the first time I saw the footage on a broadcast monitor I was floored. We would color grade the hell out of the XL-1 shots, but we barely had to do anything with this stuff.

We're still deep in dev right now, and after all the money's in place, comes prepro. Locations are still a big question mark. Iceland and Scotland are at the tops of the wish list. ;)

Also, I think a few posters mentioned they weren't too impressed by some of the composites. Care to mention which ones? We'd appreciate the criticism; always trying to improve.

Not sure what you mean - I don't think anyone on this particular thread has questioned the SFX. I thought the composites were done very, very well. Absolutely seamless which is quite remarkable given the DV codec!

The only things that stuck out to me were the underexposed forest shot and a bit of wobble here and there; though these may have been due to a variety of compression, artistic choice etc.

How much preproduction is there to do? I guess you guys did expand the script. Are you going to be changing a lot of the storyboards, costumes etc? Scottland and Iceland would be wonderful places to shoot in! Wish I could go!

Maybe people deleted there posts?, I just watched it again ( sorry to suck the bandwidth) I think that definetly for the amount of cash it's real good, I look forward to seeing more....

That's odd - oh well perhaps it was in another thread.

Shaw, we added some hand-held movement to a few FX shots to help sell the comps. Sometimes a locked down establishing wide just yells MATTE PAINTING!

Yes a lot will be changed, enhanced, fleshed out. Thanks for the support, I'll be sure to keep you informed of big news. We'll definitely keep using the DVX, if only for EPK stuff.

Ah! Yeah, the handheld movement didn't affect the comps at all. Great work :)

I'm curious what settings you guys used on the DVX. Hearing other peoples preferences is always interesting.
