Cheap Telecine

Hi there,

Sorry I had to 'bring work home' by posting here, but it seems like the film board is almost abandoned.

Was wondering if anyone can recommend an affordable telecine or scanning (Sniper DV8?) service for 16mm and maybe even 8mm, preferably in Canada (ideally, in Vancouver BC)?

I'll be calling up Rainmaker, Technicolor and NorthwestFX today, but it seems like what they offer is a bit too fancy for my project. I'll ask them if they can do a test transfer as my first 16mm project is nothing lengthy. There is also Frame Discreet operated by a cool guy Justin Lovell who is Toronto. The prices are superb but the turnaround time is a bit too long for my current project. I'll definitely check him out later when the deadline is a bit more flexible.

Any ideas?

You might give these guys a call. If you aren't looking for a true professional transfer then they are probably the next best thing.

Looks like they are the guys that make the Sniper transfer machine that Justin over at Frame Discreet bought. He modded it though, so now it can produce uncompressed scans. I've seen some of his footage and it's stunning. Even the super8 stuff looks very very good. I think what I'll end up doing is paying for the rush service and sending it over to him. He's got a small company which offers kick ass service at insanely low prices.
