Cheap shotgun mic - ATR55

Matt,

Your post was long, but well appreciated.

I have the wireless Sennheiser EW100 and have been using a cheap mic that came with a voice recorder to do some camera tests with. It works pretty well so far. But after reading your "using a $55 mic with a $3500 camera" statement I realized that my mic "could" work for more than camera tests, but why would I want it to. My sound needs to be better than my picture and I need to buy a great quality mic, so instead of searching on eBay for this ATR-55, or continuing my bid on a ME66/K6 set, I'm going to search for Oktava.

Thanks for a great post.

Hi! I took this from one of your posts

Now you can get an Oktava hyper for around $165
>>
Any idea where ?
Thanks!

Get what you can afford may be an excuse for not buying that 416 from B&H, but spending 60$ when you you could HEAVILY improve by spending 180$ is a weak one IMHO...
I´d rather save another 2 months (quit smoking, stop drinking, cook at home and don´t eat out, avoid parking tickets;o) ) - if you ain´t got the money by then, you have chosen the wrong HOBBY...

There's a discount code but I forgot what it is. It is rather odd though, seemed like they actually raised the price of the Oktava since the last time I bought from them ($185 shipped).

The coupon code is/was DV. I'm not sure if it is still active, but if it isn't give them a call and they will probably still honor it. Do not buy Octavas from any other source - you run a serious risk of buying a Chinese knock-off instead.

If you have decent sound on your demo reel, the better money will follow. You will never have a chance to get the good jobs until you do some quality work.

About the "elitist" comment above -

We hear this a lot, especially from people that bounce into the forum and ask what the best mic is for under $100.

As I see it, when serious people come in to this forum, they are looking for serious advice from folks with sound experience. Many of the long-timers here have experimented with lots of different gear - I know Matt has, I have, and Oleg certainly has. Most of the time, our comments come from real world experience. I have never used the ATR-55, so I did not comment on its quality. Now, if you aske me about the ME66 I will start gagging and choking. That comes from my personal experience with that mic. None of the recommendations that come through here are elitist, just honest assessments in the quality of gear. No one here is insisting that the only gear you could possibly consider acceptable is a Zaxcom Deva V with a Cooper 206 (totalling, btw, more than $30,000). Though, I do have to tell you, if you expect to work on a studio feature based here in the US, you probably will need a Deva and a Cooper.

So, we're not elitist here, just honest. Some more blunt than others. :-) And, if you read the stickies, there is a nice thread that discusses options for the lowest of low budgets.

And, as Matt said above, if someone can spend $3,500 or so on a camera, why does that same person think it is then reasonable to spend anything less than that on sound. Movies are 50% picture, 50% sound. (And, be sure to check out my signature as I believe this is true).
