Cheap Options for good lighting.

I was wondering if there is any cheap tricks perhaps on getting good lighting.

Is there any particular bulbs I could buy that perhpas I could just screw in to existing light sources that will give me a good lighting effect?

Are lighting kits really worth it?

What are my options for a dirt cheap college student?

Thanks

Yeah, good lighting kits are really worth owning. That said, there are many things that are low cost and can be really effective.

You mention using "...exsisting lighting" (better known as practicals). This is a great source of light and if you use some of the higher output photo floods (like an ECA) they can work extremely well. Other low cost items to consider are inexpensive reflector clamp lamps, Chinese Lanterns, work lights, compact fluorescent fixtures; the list goes on and on.

If you have a specific situation that you can describe, then a specific reply is possible; post a requirement and I or someone here will likely be able to provide you some help.

this isn't for a specific occasion, it's just everytime i shoot with my dvx with the standard household lights, the footage appears a bit darker and on top of that if i try to do some CC with magic bullet, in return all it does is make things darker and more blurry. I was just trying to consider if it would make a good and affordable x-mas gift.

also- as for flurescents, i've heard that flourescents make your footage "ugly." meaning the lighting is not particularly white light.

thanks alot guys

its not white, flos give off a green tint to footage. Thats why you should white balance your camera manualy if using these lights.

When messing around with work lamps and my little dv camera, I noticed that the work lamp looks like a white ball of heat and turns the whole shot two steps brighter, as well compeletly whitening one of hte corners of the shot entirely.

Is there any way to fix this? Like, should I use a white balancer thing?

The nice thing about flos is several.
To state a few.
they are economically cheap.
You can use them to supplement or vice versa, daylight coming through windows or the like.
For run and gun, they dont heat up, so they are easier to handle, and they dont burn up the talent thus you can put them under it without them breaking into a sweat.
And aesthetically they give a soft falloff. Not sharp and harsh.
