Cheap matte box to be mounted on the lens

For around the same price you can get the one D Matte which can be mounted directly on the lens and you'll have a more traditional 4x4 filter Matte Box.

There's also the Genus but there's a big price difference.
 
do you need filter stages or are you just looking for light control?

i always have these with me, as they pack small and keep the flares away...

Both.
Is it possible to use a variable ND filter on the lens with those things mounted on? :)

Looks good. In the 'step rings' the smalles option is 52mm unfortunately and the Panasonic pancakes are 46 mm. Could there be another brand or solution for this?

Just search on Amazon for a step up ring from 46mm to 52mm or any other size and it should fit perfectly.

About the rubber lens hood and Fader NDs, yes, we use them all the time together. It actually makes it easier to rotate the filter and prevents your fingers from accidentally getting the shot.
 
I tested a D/Matte as an ultralight mattebox, but ended up returning it. It was far too hard to attach the box to the step-up rings, & felt like it eventually break.

The Genus is a much better option.
