Cheap Legal Lavs

Hey Guys,

My foray into the legal videography world continues... i've ordered 3 Sony Ecm-44's from bhphotovideo. Now I keep hearing that lawyers jump up from the tables forgetting they're mic'ed and bust lavs all the time. I can't afford to drop $200 bucks every other week on new lavs. Any tips on some cheap-ass lavs that still deliver acceptable audio? Like in the $40 range? Or any ideas on how to remind the lawyers they're mic'ed? Like tying giant pieces of red yarn on their fingers?

Thx,
Paulstothewall

make it wire less , there are allot used sennheiser 112 on ebay ( not g-2) , few like that and you done , kee1 hardvire in case you have rf problems

Hey
I got one from bestbuy. It was a audio technica. You have to get an adapter to run into a dvx because I think it is 1/8 stereo jack. It works great for me. It was about $35. Have you thought about putting the mic in front of them and not necessarily on them?

Thx for the tip Oleg. By the way, what's "kee1 hardwire"?

Hector, it seems to be industry standard to have a clip-on mic. I'll check out the Audio Technica's... seems I'd just need to pick up mini jack to XLR adaptors to run them into a mixer.

its keep :-)
you will not able to power these mics whithout 48 phantom to lo voltage bias adaptor , better look for something from samson , very cheap

For some reason, when I read your problem it reminded me of the audiocast by NPR's Tony Kahn. I was surprised to hear his NPR engineer found the best place to wire the lavs was to a baseball cap worn by the respondent! That was a new one on me (allows respondent to turn head and keep tone, maintain eye to eye contact, reduces mic intimidation, etc).

Who knows, perhaps you might try a lav on baseball caps for the lawyers - just be sure to let them choose their favorite team!

Good luck, Michael
