Cheap LED Lights

Dark Side of the Camera
They sell these in german Ebay between 50 and 90 Euros.

The one I got features 306 LEDs and makes a pretty nice, flicker free daylight.

It comes with a full metal, waterresistant housing (it´s actualy for garden/year round outdoor use), and takes 25W at 24 Volts. It comes with a 110/220 to 24V adapter.

I think I get some more of the smaller ones that run on 12VDC 1200mA.

Would also make a nice on camera light for 50 bucks.

Do you have anything which can tell you the color temperature of the unit? A lot of times these cheaper products will use the really high color temperatures in the 8000K range. If yours is at least in the 5000K to 6500K range, I think you've got a pretty good winner.

Here are some quick comparsion shots

1 is the light from the Window (heavy overcast today)
2 is where the LED comes in
3 I aimed the LED to the table so you can see the Hotspot

The Package says "COLORMAX ColorBeam F&S LED Light - single Color S series".
They are aviable in 7 different light colors, so make sure you get the white not warm-white or amber.

They probably pop up on Ebay USA sooner or later.
Send the guy an email - he also may ship to the US - it´s not that much extra paperwork, yust a little green sticker.

Hey Frank,
I went to that link and everything is in german. Can you send me a link to the exact same light that you picked up. I might get one to test out.
thanks,
Luis

In "Real World" it workes nuch better than I expected.

Sunlight from the back, the LED as fill (you can see it in her glasses)

That´s what I don`t like. I would prefer a round spot in the reflection than a square.

(HVX, 35mm Adapter/adapter preset/ 55mm 1.4 Petri prime)

that square form reflection acts as a window while a round reflection would look much faker, as normaly windows are square (in my opinion).

Thanks, not tooooo bad for that "indian ripp of" adapter and cheapskate chinese LED garden light huh?

....well I have to confess I changed the hand ground plastic GG of that indian adapter for a frost glass of a Kobold HMI spot light.

I still don`t like the Bokeh.
But in a view days I will recieve an fiberoptics GG that looses almost no light and has no visible grain. Maybe I can get away with that and make a static adapter.

Translated Specs:

- Adjustable beam angle of 90 ° and at the mounting base rotated by 180 °.
- Dimensions: 32cm x 15cm
- 100 - 240VAC, 26W, 12V DC 1200mA.
- Very bright!
- Weight 1490g
- Glows with a consumption of 26 watts as bright as a conventional 300 watt halogen light
- Saves about 90% of energy costs over conventional lighting
- Aluminum
- Light color 6400k

Looks like it's in the daylight color range... Hmm... Might be fun trying one of these out as a inexpensive LitePanel alternative.

Those are the specs for the small one Leo (sorry I linked the wrong aucion)
The specs for mine are:

- Adjustable beam angle of 90 ° and at the mounting base rotated by 180 °.
- Dimensions: 32cm x 15cm
- 100 - 240VAC, 26W, 24VDC 1200mA.

- Glows with a consumption of 26 watts as bright as a conventional 350 watt halogen light

- Aluminum
- Light color 6400k

And no, it is of course not as bright as 350 watt halogen light, but still very usable.

I don't want to spoil your expectations, but aren't that six-sqared ARRI surrplushed groundglass elements, that have mistakes in material and have problems with blue frigering at higher stops??

If not, order one for me, also!!

Ah, and one more question..

Is there some easy way to turn those garden LED lights from 24V to 12V??

That would be a hit!

hmmm... it is six-squared. Didn`t know it´s ARRI Surplus.
I thought it is military - but who knows

Mein looks pretty good and I had no fringering in the first tests.

But thank´s for the heads up.

What type of ARRIs is it used in? And where? Viewfinder?

Thanks, Frank

Yes.. that's the site with info..

Well, I am not that good in German, to understand all of the text.. are they reffering that some mistakes ( Schwarzpixel) are in those samples??

Course, vignetting could be solved esy with PCX, but what about the grain??

Plese post some results..would be very interested!

Cheers,

david
