Cheap Intervalometer That Can Take More Than 399 Exposures?

Could someone please direct me to an inexpensive intervalometer, like this, but that can shoot more than 399 exposures? The ad says "1 to 399,-- (unlimited)." However, when I wrote to ask for clarification, he responded by saying that the limit is 399.

Why is it that a lot of these units are hampered by a low number of shots?

I use CHDK on a Canon point-n-shoot (which makes time-lapses sequences that perfectly matches with HD video).

CHDK adds a BASIC interpreter (!) to the tiny cameras, and I wrote a program for a film-style intervalometer:

Code:
rem by pmark23, based on Divalent's "Accurate Intervalometer"

@title Kinomatik Intervalometer

@param q hours before start
@default q 0
@param b frame rate (frames per sec)
@default b 24
@param k shoot duration (hrs)
@default k 1
@param c shoot duration (mins)
@default c 0
@param e final duration (secs)
@default e 10

w=c*60
y=k*60*60
z=y+w

x=e*b

f=z/x

p=z
a=p/f

m=e*600
n=f*10
o=g

print "Interval:",f," secs."
print "Total Shots: ",a

  if z<0 then z=0
  if x<0 then x=0
  if y<0 then y=0

rem TURN RAW and NR off, focus to infinity (and beyond)
set_raw 0
set_raw_nr 1
set_focus 65535

rem set quality to best, size large, no flash
  set_prop 23 0
  set_prop 24 0
  set_prop 16 2

rem ensure # of shots more than 1
  if a<2 then a=2

d=f*1000
  if d<1 then d=1

  n=1
rem start with initial pause of q + 1 sec
  sleep q*60*60*1000+1000
  t=get_tick_count
  shoot
rem  sleep 50
  print "Shot", n, "of", a
print "Wait: ",d/1000/60, " mins ", d/1000%60," secs"

rem now we've done the first shot. do the rest

  for n=2 to a
  s=t+d
print "ticks=",t," sleep=",s,
print "d=",d
:wait_loop
  t=get_tick_count
rem print "ticks=",t," sleep=",s
  if t<s then goto "wait_loop"
  shoot
rem  sleep 50
  print "Shot", n, "of", a
print "Wait: ",d/1000/60, " mins ", d/1000%60," secs"
  next n

end

There's a few other intervalometers programs to choose from as well.

It's quite awesome, and I carry the tiny camera on a tiny tripod (weighs almost nothing), and shoot timelapse sequences whenever I'm out shooting video.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about using my Canon Powershot for this. After reading about all of the enhancements to be gained, I was very interested; however, the SD780 is not currently supported. This page indicates that CHDK is under development for it and there are dumps, whatever they are. Perhaps someone who knows how to write this stuff can complete it (hint, hint).

I have one that was $20; however it has a limit of 99 exposures. The link above is to one that runs $30; its limit is 399. I don't know a whole lot about intervalometers but my guess would be that these have much fewer features. I just need a bare-bones model with an unlimited number of exposures. I've been scouring eBay; the problem is the ads don't always reveal this information.
