Cheap HDTV Monitor

I'm on the prowl for a good small-budget external monitor that doesn't have to be on-board the camera/tripod/etc. I see cheap LCD HDTVs everywhere...

I single this one out because ViewSonic has a decent reputation.

I shoot primarily in 720p, and all I need is an accurate preview of color and sharpness. Am I foolish for thinking any of these might fit my needs? For a startup filmmaker, do I need more fidelity, and why/why not?

Insight appreciated!

I use a computer LCD for a director's monitor from the HDMI port. While the image is close, but it is not true to the actual image coming from the camera. It is too difficult to calibrate a computer monitor correctly. However, they are great for monitoring frame and are easier to focus with than the on board LCD simply due to the size. Just let your director know to ignore the color for the most part.

I like the LCD because you can get a VESA mount, bolt on baby pin and then easily mount the monitor onto a c-stand or light stand with a knuckle, very mobile.

I was looking at tv monitors like this until I found the manhattan 8.9" monitor. For a couple hundred dollars more you get a monitor that is easy to carry around in the field and will work on batteries.

I have a Gateway 24 HD monitor and to be honest I think it sucks as a true monitor for video.
Playback is fine for movies and such but the calibration is off and hard to pin down.
My 18.4 Sony laptop has a far better image out the box.

I would look at true HD video monitors.
I think computer monitors even when they are HD are not really made for video monitoring.

My 2 cents.
