Cheap field monitor suggestions? Lilliput 5dii vs Ikan VL5kit

Hello everyone, Looking into getting a cheap field monitor to help with peaking, etc and give me just a generally larger and more flexible screen to work with. I've found two that look interesting in my cheapo price range - The lilliput 5Dii and the Ikan VL5Kit.I have googled but can't find a ton of info about choosing one over the other, or even reviews of any sort of depth.Does anyone have some experiences or opinions on these monitors, or another suggestion in the same sub $300 field monitor price range? Thanks in advance!DanielPortland, OR

I need the same advice here bacause I broke my HVX200 display today. Service charge me to $1200 but overall camera cost about $4000 so it looks stupid to get it.
So I wish to try 3rd party's monitoring solution with wider abilities and quality than standard display to cover my insult :)
Main problem that I cant understand is the type of connection to monitor and power supply. Can I connect to monitor via Firewire interface to get a live picture. There is another problem here. There is no HDMI slot in HVX200. Crazy thing at this days. Can I get component cable smaller than supplied? What type of connector used in component cable from the camera's side? Can it be converted to HDMI somehow? Can I use power for monitor not from battery but from some camera's outputs? A lot of questions here. And looks like using a cheapest lcd display is the right way to go in a case of using composite camera output.

I found next links of using the Lilliput and Ikan here:

Oh. Looks like I posted not in the Panasonic HVX200 thread. Sorry.

@RTLdan: ive used the VL5 and for the money its hard to beat from a usability standpoint. the next level up in quality (probably one of the smallHD offerings) is noticeably more expensive

@AndyGandy: that's a lot of questions...

1. "Can I connect to monitor via Firewire interface to get a live picture." - yes and no. YES you will get picture over firewire. but NO. i dont know of any affordable field monitor that has firewire input. you could use a laptop. but that would be ridiculous.

2. "
There is no HDMI slot in HVX200. Crazy thing at this days." - thats not crazy. the HVX came out before HDMI became so widespread.

3. "
Can I get component cable smaller than supplied?" - smaller as in SHORTER? not that im aware of. and if it is it will be a special order item.
if you need shorter, just wrap the excess length up with some kind of zip, bongo, velcro or twist tie.

3b. "
What type of connector used in component cable from the camera's side?" its a proprietary "d-cable to component" cable

4. "
Can it be converted to HDMI somehow?" yes. but shop around because most converters require external power supplies.

i wouldnt let HDMI monitors drive your decision. there are several monitors out there with component inputs. they often cost a little more but after you get power, converters and mounts to use an hdmi monitor, the final price wont be that much if any different. and a native component solution will end up being far simpler and less bulky without all that additional required hardware

id look at the smalld dp4 as the easiest and most hassle free replacement of hvx200 on camera LCD
the ikan vk5 will be a little cheaper. but its bigger and will thus be a bit bulkier for on-camera use

5. "
Can I use power for monitor not from battery but from some camera's outputs?" - NO. power is not passed via the component output

Thank you a lot for your response! I get the idea.
What about power I mean can I supply power from XLR or other outputs of the camera?

Hi again! Sorry to bump my own thread. Got ridiculously busy with family Christmas things.
Glad to hear you can recommend the VL5...
as a last question though, do you find that 5" is a big enough monitor, or would you prefer something slightly larger like a 7" monitor? I'm not really planning on mounting my monitor on the camera -- building a rail system for myself that I intend to mount monitor and audio recorder.

Thanks!
Daniel
