Cheap cam for capture not working?

I picked up a Panasonic PV-GS9 to use for capturing and for output to monitor. Using Panasonic would mean using same batteries and charger and less wear/tear on DVX.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. I can capture fine on my DVX100 but when trying to capture from the GS-9 it just fasts forward past the scene and says it can't find the timecode.

Is there a way to display the camera timecode in the log window?
What is the minimum camera that can truly provide timecode data (recorded on DVX100) on playback?

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Hmmm... change your capture presets to something that you will use only with your GS9. Don't know why it won't work unless for some reason it won't caputure when it thinks the 100 is hooked up.

You should still see timecode in the L/C window.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

I can capture fine with iMovie and the GS9.
Final Cut can output firewire to the camera.
Final cut can actually see the images (displays in log window) but won't capture even when the Now button is pressed. Says it's waiting for timecode. I've switched it through a few different settings includign basic firewire. No go.
Pansonic sheet lists timecode for thsi camera and indeed it displays a timecode number in the dispaly but that seems to be fixed at 0:0:0.
I may have to do a test record to see if that might work.
Final Cut doesn't list any of the Panasonic GS cameras on their list.
Couldn't find most of the cameras they list as being currently available.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Scott,

did you get your GS9 to work during capture in FCP? I just bought one this weekend, thinking maybe I'll just use capture now to get my clips, but it actually displayed timecode properly and I was able to catpure as usual. I don't think I did anything differently. I used one of the FCP easy setups (the 24pa one with remove advanced pulldown). I don't think I did anything special to the GS9, just changed audio to 16bits, turned off beeps, turned off EIS, turned off the date on the display, etc. BTW, I'm not using FCP HD.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

I never got the one I had to work so I shipped it back.
If you have one owrking maybe I got a bad one.
I'm using FCP HD

Are you able to input timecode in and out points and do a batch capture or are you doing a capture now?

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

I have not tried batch capturing yet in FCP. But, I'm not using capture now. I'm able to see timecode from the tape OK, and I just search through the tape, mark in and out points and use <clip> to capture.

I know it's strange. I was playing with a friend's GS120 on my FCP system and I couldn't get it to work this way.

One thing you might try is to shot something on the cheap camera and capture with the cheap camera to see if that even works. I didn't try this with the GS120. I did do it with the GS9 and it worked.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Let me know if you're able to log and capture with timecode on the GS9.
Sounds like GS9 had the same issues as your friends gs120. Not sure why they're not consistent.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Finally got around to logging clips and batch capturing with the GS9. It works fine on my G4, FCP 4.1 system. I shoot on a DVX100A in 24PA.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Maybe I'll pick up another GS9 locally and give it a shot.
Surprised that the cameras seem to be inconsistent.

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

I've seen issues with capturing free-run timecode: the camera wants to do a 5 second pre-roll and the 5 seconds before the beginning of the capture time is a timecode break: confuses the heck out of the camera.

Also, some cheaper cameras don't like timecodes over an hour or so: not a problem if it auto-resets when you put a new tape in, but you get weird looking timecode (A19:04;20) if you are in, say, 10:04:19;20 (via a pre-set timecode or free-run timecode).

The solution for me was to capture now, then "play", then use "detect DV start/stop" to break the master clip up.

Hope this helps,

Re: Cheap cam for capture not working?

Hmmm, interesting - well i been using a Sharp Viewcam - is great for capturing, i mean i works just fine not only that but it has the build-in monitor to check your footage...
