hey guys. im wondering what you all charge you clients for tapestock (specifically on PQ's) . how much do you guys mark up each tape? i heard 15% somewhere. but i wanted to get a couple of opinions.

im supposed to bill my client within the next 24 hours, so hopefully i can get some quick replies. thanks so much.

ps. i think we should have a BUSINESS section on this website too, where we can ask each other questions that pertain to running your own company and stuff like that. anyone agree?

Re: Charging Clients for Tapestock...

At Yale, they charge $12 for a half-hour tape (which of course costs them $3, they use PQ's). At the tape dubbing place I use, they try to charge about $30 for a half-hour Betacam tape (which I buy direct from National Videotape for about $7). So instead of 15%, from what I've seen they charge about 400%.

When I do tape dubs for clients, on VHS, I usually charge about $10, and the stock costs me about 88c. At my daughter's graduation, the facility was offering VHS's of the proceedings for $35, or DVD's for $45. DVD-R's cost less than VHS's nowadays! Usually under $1. But they were still marking it up an additional $10.

Charge what you can. You've got to recover your initial cost, plus tax, plus shipping, plus the time it took you to order it, plus whatever other miscellaneous items come up along the way...

Re: Charging Clients for Tapestock...

I don't charge my clients directly for tape stock I charge them indirectly...I charge them per project...I would charge anywhere from 6-8 bucks a tape...

EDIT: Actually I am with Barry I would charge as much as you can get away with...not 6-8 bucks...what was I thinking?!
