Chappie Review

Overall, entertaining. If you are a Die Antwoord fan as I am, this is a must see.

Definitely had a District 9 look to it, like same camera and color correcting, etc. It's kind of a hot look, with maybe a touch of bleach bypass or something. I liked it but would like to see Bloomkamp do something else for a change.

Special FX were top notch. The robots just were robots on the screen. The CGI Was fantastic.

I thought for first time actors in a major motion picture Yolandi and Ninja did a good job, and interesting character for Hugh Jackman although it was hard to get past the mullet.

What was unexpected was the comedy aspect, or the kind of tongue in cheek approach to the script, but it was definitely a movie that did not take itself to seriously.

Spoiler alert:

Some pet peeves. WAY to much Die Antwoord. It was like Bloomkamp let them run riot over the movie just making a big Die Antwoord video. There was a Die Antwoord sound track, Die Antwoord art all over the background, and Ninja was wearing a Die Antwoord Tshirt, with "Die Antwoord" on it, and his own face on the front of the shirt. It would be like Beyonce playing a character in a movie, while wearing a Beyonce Tshirt with her face on it, just weird.

And minor but annoying plot holes: Chappie's battery is fused to his chassis so when the battery runs out he will die because you can't put in a new battery. Really? There is no way to figure out how to recharge a battery? Everyone knows you can recharge batteries, even the batteries that are not rechargeable can be recharged a few times, or you can just bypass that battery and hook up some direct power. So that was hard to believe.

Also, the designer of the robot could have just said, "Hey Chappie, take me to a hospital, I've been shot!" But they never think of that at all and he goes way to willingly into the other solution in my opinion.

So, kinda jerky with some hits and misses, but overall not boring and a fun movie to watch.

I thought they pretty much ruined the movie. Their roles were too pivotal to entrust to amateurs, especially the girl whose relationship with Chappie should have been the heart of the movie. But she was a flat out terrible actress. As a whole the movie was not as bad as a lot of reviewers are making it out to be but I can't say it's good. But no, I wasn't bored by it. Blokamp is more interesting in his failures than many filmmakers are when they succeed.

I liked it. Thought Ninja was really good and Yolandi was a little jarring at first but really grew on me.

Chappie was an excellent character.

VFX pretty amazing as expected.

Wasn't quite what I expected, though I'm not sure why I expected what I expected. I really should have known it would be pretty much District 9 with a robot.

Which isn't to say that's bad; it's just what Blomkamp does.

The thing I like about Blomkamp is that he makes his alien/robot/whatever characters real. Maybe it makes them a little too human -- would an alien or a brand new, untested artificial intelligence really be THAT human? But it certainly makes them characters with fleshed-out (no pun intended) thoughts and feelings.

Copley really knocked it out of the park as Chappie. Never was much of a Die Antwoord fan, but I thought it was weird that they were using their own names as their character names. Were they really supposed to be themselves? It was set a few years in the future, so maybe.

I didn't buy Jackman's character at all. One dimensional, and the religion angle was lame.

Anyway, I'll give it a 7.5.
