Changing timeline settings. Editing my HD reel.

I am editing my reel, and I am bringing all of my .mov files back into FCP to edit into one. When I bring these files into the sequence, FInal Cut alerts me of the clip not matching the sequence settings, and offers to change them for me. When it does this my footage looks kind of squeezed together. Is there anything I can do to know for sure I'm getting the best of quality?

hit command+0 and change your sequence settings to match the dimensions of your footage. What type of codec are you editing with?

You are going to want to transcode that. FCP doesn't play well w/ h.264 files. You can transcode with Compressor or MPEG Streamclip to Pro Res or some other codec. Is all your footage HD?

If it's H.264 from a Canon DSLR, version 2 of their Log & Transfer plugin will do it, and keep all the metadata/timecode. Version 2 doesn't need the whole folder structure, and is slightly faster than version 1, which was as fast as MPEGStreamclip. Compressor takes forever...
