changing levels throughout the time line

in after effects i imported an avi edited in premiere. i want to change the levels for each scene since in premiere there is no such mechanism as the histogram in
AE. i am doing this by placing a key frame in the beginning and end of each scene and adjust the levels for that scene. when i adjust levels for the next scene
however (after a cut) the levels before the cut (in old scene) are also changed. shouldn't one change the levels for each scene? should this be done after the editing. i guess that this problem would be solved if one uses AE to colour correct each take separetley and then use premiere to edit afterwards but i think that you will get a feeling of the color correction required only after putting it up all together. any suggestions? 10x

I don't know if Premiere has a way to export its timeline to AE, but having your clips on seperate layers would help. As for keyframes, what part of the effect are you keyframing? Another way to do it would be to create a levels effect for every clip then keyframe their visibilty, but that would be prohibitive if you're doing a lot of clips.

In AE go to edit split layer and it will split the timeline at the playhead for as many layers as you like, enabling you to correct each layer individually. Might not work if you have crossfades between shots but for simple cuts it will work.

Cool tip, I never knew about that. I'm about to export a whole timeline from FCP for finishing in AE, and this helps a lot! Without using 3rd party software, is there a way for bringing over markers from FCP, maybe throuh XML? I know about Automatic Duck, but can't afford it right now.

You can import PPro projects into AE. Thats a handy way to get the whole timeline into AE.

Maybe this isn't what you where refering too, but in PPro you can adjust levels with a histogram the same way you do in AE and Photoshop.

It in effects-->video effects-->adjust--> and you can choose from auto levels or levels.

I have never found the auto levels and auto color to be that useful, but the levels gives you a histogram that you can use to and then copy that effect to all the similar clips or you can nest your entire clip into a new sequence and apply the levels adjustment to the entire clip.

nicholasraeburn: In AE go to edit split layer - that will do the job as you said..for cuts...as already noted: cool tip, thank you very much! in 10 years from now i would have never got to it.

I did not manage to do this: upon choosing the premiere project it says unsupported file type or extention both if you try to import the project as a file or to directly open the premiere project. i have version 7. anything i am missing?

ChuckS:
It in effects-->video effects-->adjust--> levels ..no histogram there just pointers to move the while input level and so on..maybe its' my version 7?

I believe version 7 is PPro 1.0, I also think you might be eligable for a free upgrade to 1.5. At any rate in PPro when you apply the effect in the effect pallet not only do you get all the sliders but there is a smal icon for setup which launches the histogram and you can make adjustments there just like photoshop.

- What version of Premiere do you have?
- What version of AE do you have?

When you say "or to directly open the premiere project", does that mean that you can not open the Premiere project itself in Premiere?

ChuckS: you were right, i missed the tiny setup button, i noted it for colour balance but did not realise its purpose for the levels too. many thanks.

No I mean i can open premiere projects in premiere but i cannot open premiere projects (and hence with the same timeline) in AE. I have AE version 6.

Anyhow i do not want to insist too much on the last point although it would be nice to know. in any case you have all been of great help, many thanks!
