Changing Hard Drives Safely

Have a 500gb resting in a G5 Quad with 250+- left. Bought a 320gb to keep the OS, Apps & Project files (if my thinking is correct). Will then use the 500gb for capture, render and heavy lifting.

Running OSX 10.4.7, FCS 5, Photoshop 7, After Effects 6.5.

Not too sure how to rearrange the zeros and ones and still make things work. All thoughts welcome and appreciated.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to take the system files from an existing drive, and move them to a different drive? Depending on the manufacturer, they will often include software that will safely move your system for you. Maxtor is usually pretty good about that.

Yes, that's it. Everything is currently on the larger drive and I want to move the system and app files to the smaller one which would free up the other for capture files. The new drive is a Seagate 320. Didn't come with any software. Thanks.

Looking at the Seagate support area, it doesn't look like they have any programs to do that. They also don't appear to be big Mac fans, as all the software they do have is for Windows. I'm not much for Macs either, so I'm afraid I can't really help you. The only thing I might suggest, is returning the Seagate, and get a Maxtor drive with the software you need.

OS X should have some Disk Utility options that would allow you to do that. You might want to consider returning the Seagate and getting an IBM/Hitachi drive. I don't think mine came with software, either, but it's the best HDD for the price, IMHO.
