Changing an Effects Duration Time, anyone?

Hey all!

I'm VERY new to AE 6.5 Standard and have just begun playing with it and experimenting. The Video Collection came with some training DVDs which have been great to get started but alas, I am stuck already!!!

I was playing with AE to do some text titles. I created the text and added the effect (horefly, I believe) and it looks great. But it is only 2 seconds long. How do I change the duration to say like 5 or 6 seconds? I've tried a lot of different things and it doesn't seem to do a thing to the time!!! Of course the manual was oh so helpful!

drag the right side end of the text layer to a longer tim in the timeline and then open up the eefetcs control window for the layer by pressing F3 or expand he l;ayer down with the arrown next to it in the timeline window, to view the effects controls keyframe control.

Thanks for the tip! I tried just that but no matter what animation preset I select when I hit F3 the effects control pop up is blank!!!

So far the only way I found to slow up or speed up the effect, which I don't like, is under "Layer" to do "time stretch". Is there another way? I can't figure out what I'm not seeing!!! It seems like it should be fairly obvious how to have an effect last for a set duration of time, but I'll be damned if I can see it!

you have to select the layer you want to view the effect controls for first. single click it and then hit f3. if your talking about just a text layer with an animation preset, the animation preset is NOT an effect. but it will expand out to its modifier/expression values under then text layer in the timeline view.

thers a little triangle to the left of the layer name in the timeline.. click it and it expands the layer effetcs and transform controls downward under the layer there you can set keyframes for every parameter of every control or effect available for that layer. it is essentially the same as the effects control window essentialy but you can see where the keyframes are on the timeline you can set the parameters fort he expression control for the text layer animation preset there too. .. messing with expressions is bit tricky to try when your just starting out though.. id reccommend puling up the Help and reading up on them first.

if you cant find the little triangle, just click anywhere in the empty timeline space AWAY from the layer you want to select, then single click onto the layer one time, and hit the "u" key. that should expand ALL layer properties down underneath the layer in the timeline view.
