Change the background color of text?

Hi is it possible to change the backgroundcolor of the text in AE like you can do in pages, word. Instead of transparent I would like to show black under the text (and also where it is spaces). You can do this almost by using the set alpha
but with one setback. Set alpha uses the whole rectangular box you write the in. This gets a problem when you have dual lines of text and the upper line is longer than the lower.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for here, but I'll try to answer.

If I'm reading you right, you just want a solid color shape behind your line of text. If that's the case, then create either a shape layer or a solid. Draw your shapes/masks to the proper size and shape you want, then parent that layer to your text. Or you could just precomp them together instead.
