Change from fullscreen to widescreen with already finished proj?

I work in a mac lab helping students with video editing. All of the time.. students will take widescreen footage, drop the footage in a 4:3 timeline.. and begin editing. Then when they are finished they come to me and I see that their project is now horribly letterboxed.

I have never found an easy way to fix this in fcp.. is there a way to simply change it to the way it should be without having to re-edit things?

I think if you copy all the footage in the timeline, then drop it onto a widescreen timeline, it will work. (for anything that isn't nested at least)
